Bristol's annual Red Feather Day will be this Sunday with nearly 200 volunteers starting at 1 pm. canvassers will collect contributions for the Community Fund from homes, reporting to zone captains at Reynolds School for tallying and auditing by volunteer tellers.
Mrs Toste winner of the CBS Televisit Contest was guest speaker at the Junior Women's Club second meeting at the Gul leray House Tuesday evening. She described her trip to New York and Hollywood sponsored by the contest.
Daylight Saving Time ends this season and Sunday morning will occur earlier. Most people will wake an hour earlier as clocks shift to Eastern Standard Time, provided they remember to adjust before bed tomorrow night.
After years on separate paths the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Review meet in harmony to pursue streamlined zoning revisions. The joint session in the Burnside Building backs giving the Town Council final say, while reviews of plats on Ferry Road and Cedarcrest Shores proceed. Residents along San Juan Drive- Fatima Drive corridor approve the Francis plat for 20 lots, with 22 nearby property owners not objecting.
The Bristol Train of Artillery will sponsor small arms training classes again in cooperation with the National Rifle Association. Col. Philip T. Bodell announced the effort. Hunter safety classes will be conducted with the State Division of Fish and Game.
Edgar R. LaVault of the Providence Post Office reveals Hope Street site selected for a new post office building. The land option spans Hope to Thames Streets with truck entrance on Thames Street, affecting neighboring properties including Wardwell House Library and a bakery. Plans await bids and planning board actions, with no objections from advisor John Carter of the RI Development Council.
The Holy Rosary Society of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church marks its twenty fifth anniversary with a 7 AM high Mass. Members assemble at 6 45 in the parish hall, then gather at 12 30 for a procession to the school auditorium, followed by a 1 PM banquet and dinner.
Ernest R Berndt of 35 Ellendale Road Warren owned a 25 foot cabin cruiser that exploded while starting the craft Tuesday evening. He escaped uninjured by diving overboard as flames breached floorboards. Warren and Bristol fire departments along with a 64 foot Coast Guard Tug responded. The fire set fuel tanks alight and drove firefighters back. The craft drifted to a nearby Pawtucket dock owned by J Ralph Metz, threatening the pier but only a 10 foot section was damaged. The boat valued near 5000 dollars burned to the waterline and was partially insured.
CD Director Nelson Beals told last night’s industrial health meeting in the Council Chambers that no local industry is prepared for disaster emergencies. The session, called by the local health department led by Dr Paul Bruno, drew reps from Kar Aluminum and Chemical Crp Bristol Mfg Corp Currets Corp Dixon Corp George W Dahl Co Inc Bristol Lace Co Crown Fastener Corp Thames Mfg Corp and Smith Tetreault Container Corp. Also present were Mrs Charlotte C Plaster of the Red Cross and Mrs Carolyn M Paton of the Providence Red Cross Chapter. Beals urged forming First Aid teams in all industries.
Tax Collector Reynolds G Northup reported that sixty one percent of the 1959 tax assessment has been collected in the first quarter. The $64,444,471 intake is about $60,000 higher than the same period last year, while the total levy rose to $1,063,651.95 from $970,874.44. Unpaid amounts by year are listed from 1955 to 1958, with prior-year totals and pre-1955 unsettled at $7,602.15.
