Henry Wood named chairman of the Bristol Post War Public Projects Planning Committee at a meeting in the Council Chamber. Henry F. Serbst elected secretary and a Providence meeting at the Crown Hotel on Thursday under the State Planning Board was planned with delegates including A. A. Edmonds and J. Floyd Huestis.

State wide scrap metal drive set for October 24 across Rhode Island

Rhode Island will hold a state wide scrap metal drive on Sunday October 24 as part of a national effort led by the War Production Board. Local salvage committees urged households farms and businesses to gather metal including iron steel copper and brass while excluding porcelain enameled items and tin cans to aid war production and steel supplies.

Charles H. Scott Jr Awarded Purple Heart in North Africa

First Lt Charles H Scott Jr received the Order of the Purple Heart from a letter to his parents. He is recovering in a North Africa hospital from a hip wound suffered July 6 during the Tunisian campaign while serving with the Amphibious Command. He is married with a three month old son and his wife Barbara Harris of Barrington.

Soldier Joseph Lawrence Completes US Army Motor Course

Private first class Joseph Lawrence, son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Lawrence of 20 Thompson Avenue, completed a motor transport and maintenance course at the American School Center in England. The program covered general automotive mechanics with a short course for tactical troops and stressed daily vehicle checkups to ensure proper maintenance.

Pfc William R. Tattrie Dies in Southwest Pacific Accident

Private First Class William R. Tattrie husband of Esther K. Tattrie of 173 Metacom Avenue was killed on October 2 in the Southwest Pacific Area after an accident. A War Department telegram expressed sympathy as a letter from Tattrie dated October 1 arrived, noting he had been in a rest home and was not yet well. He was born November 11, 1908 and served after training at Fort Riley and Fort Bliss, with overseas service beginning in August. He is survived by his wife, his father, two sisters Ruth Nerone and Mrs Van Voochts, and a brother Allen Tattrie Sr., stationed in England with the Merchant Marine.

School Receives Pratt & Whitney Plane Motor for Training

A nine cylinder airplane motor arrived from Mitchell Field and was installed in the Andrews Memorial School machine shop for pre induction instruction. A plane is expected to join it soon, to be housed at Linden Place garage under arrangements with Russell G. Colt.

Bomber Crew Pilot Alan Hibbert Scored In Pacific Action

Staff Sergeant Alan Hibbert 20 son of Mr and Mrs George Hibbert of 240 Hope Street was part of a bomber crew that shot down three Zeros over Tarawa during the September 18 19 joint Army Navy attack on northern Gilberts announced at Seventh Air Force Base Hawaii on Sept 26 He assisted as an army bomber assistant engineer taking part in two raids with bombs dropped on strategic targets He holds the Air Medal for meritorious achievement and has participated in raids on Nauru and Wake Island.
