Bristol Salvage Committee calls for volunteers to collect papers and rags on Sunday from 8 30 am at the Town Garage Mt Hope Ave. Private trucks are urged and 13 a ton paid. Bundles to be four tied with 20 25 pounds each. Target is 10 pounds per person. Proceeds fund playground supervision and equipment.
The Colt football team stepped in to harvest frost threatened string beans at Joe Estrella's farm on Tuesday afternoon. With an emergency and potential crop loss, the squad agreed to a workout while helping, guided by Coach Allen, and the crop was saved with remuneration for their service.
Columbus Day is not a time and a half holiday under Executive Order 9240, so workers in war production receive no holiday premium unless the employer and employee substitute Columbus Day for Memorial Day. If substitution occurs, the employer cannot claim a premium for the following Memorial Day. The order also caps six time and a half holidays per year from Oct 1 to Oct 1. Marshall Morgan will speak at the Historical Society meeting about Historical and Genealogical Gleanings, noting lost persons and missing heirs. Carmellina Formisano, 24, daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Formisano of 131 Bradford Street, has joined the SPARS and departed for the Coast Guard Training Station for Women at Palm Beach Florida. After four weeks of basic training she may receive a working assignment in the United States or advance to Palm Beach for further training toward Petty Officer rating. Her brothers Ralph, in the Navy, and Joseph, in the Army Air Force, are also serving.
