Town approves emergency highway fund for 1943 repairs

Nineteen taxpayers approved a 12000 appropriation to speed emergency highway work. The town council adopted after brief remarks, with Richard Connery outlining repairs on Franklin Constitution Thames Tupelo streets and Tanyard Brook. Costs include materials 5172 salaries 483 labor 3325 and other expenses.

James G. Carns Jr former Bristol County Water Company manager will address fellow Rotarians at noon at the Doric Club. His departure for a New York office leaves vacant the YMCA presidency and Rotary vice presidency.

Organ Recital by Dr Minor C Baldwin at First Congregational

Dr Minor C Baldwin, renowned organist, gave a Sunday afternoon recital at the First Congregational Church console before about 200 attendees. The program featured Bach Toccata, Reverie, Mozart Mass selections, Tschaikowsky melody, Musette gavotte, Il Trovatore pieces, Schubert arrangements, Brady Good Night Sweet Jesus, plus a violin encore by Hubert F Hill with Baldwin.

Gideons Organize Mt Hope Camp Here

Gideons International form Mt Hope Camp in this district at Gurteras House Saturday evening. Homer A Palm elected president with Evan Evans vice president Sidney Kullberg secretary and John Chase treasurer Otis E Bailey chaplain. Rex Family Leaves Today for New York

Mr and Mrs Edmund S Rex and their daughter Hope depart Bristol for New York where Rex joins Virgil P Ettinger's tax firm as a tax staffer. Previously he was a tax specialist for the Republican National committee and worked with Yale figures during the 1936 campaign. He has been active in Red Cross and American Legion circles and will reside in Larchmont, New York.

Officials to discuss harbor pollution at town meeting

State and Town Officials from the Division of Sanitary Engineering and the Bristol Sewer Commission join the Town Council in a 7:30 p m session at Burnside Memorial Building to review harbor pollution causes and potential elimination. Local residents are urged to attend to understand the issue and possible bathing beach plans. The meeting follows letters to authorities and prior failed attempts to arrange talks. Tests by the State Health Department have so far prevented authorizing a town bathing beach. Progress toward solving the harbor pollution problem is hoped for with concrete action forthcoming.

Trudell Found Dead Here After Army Discharge

Alfred L Trudell was found hanged from a tree on Buttonwood avenue three days after receiving a medical discharge from the Army. The medical examiner ruled death a self inflicted act. Surviving family includes his mother Mrs Albina Trudell and four brothers, with a full military funeral planned at St Marys Church.

Joseph A. Riccio CPO in the U S Navy has reached Camp Peary in Williams burg Virginia for basic training. He is the son of James Riccio of DeWolf avenue and a 1927 Colt Memorial High School and 1932 Rhode Island State College graduate who previously worked as a government safety engineer in Providence.

Bristol Salvage Drive Aims to Gather Papers and Rags

Ian M. Walker, chairman of the Bristol Salvage Committee, announced a Sunday salvage drive asking eight private trucks. The plan calls for newspapers magazines corrugated cardboard and rags to be bundled four ways in 20 to 25 pound lots with bundles left in front of homes. Mrs Donata Chionchio of 4 Sherry avenue joined 199 others sworn in as American citizens before Judge Charles A Walsh in Superior Court. The Italy born mother of 15 has long resided in town and visited her son Cp George in New York who was wounded in Sicily. Her six other sons serve: John Coast Guard California, Paul Army radio Sicily, James Army Air Corps Florida, Angela Navy at sea, Eugene Marine Virginia, Donald Coast Guard recently.

Hi Y Club hears Hubert F Hill on Hi Y history

Hubert F Hill Y M C A secretary spoke to the Hi Y Club last evening on its principles and history. Albert Osterberg was welcomed as a new member and the meeting ended with the national anthem. Carmine Cirillo reported a successful potato picking venture by Mr Brite and club members and others plan to assist in Sunday salvage drive for rags and papers.

Italian Women's Club Plans Charity Drive and Sale

The Italian Localites Women's Club met at Mrs Marion Sousa's Roma street home and heard a final report on the ton sil clinic. Plans for annual charity drive and Christmas sale were discussed along with a bridge event. Prize winners included Miss Madeline Cortellessa, Miss Mary Solzane, Mrs Frances Holmes, and Mrs. Nancy Vitello.

Army and Navy Tests at Bristol High November 9

The Army Specialized Training Program and the Navy College Program V-12 will hold a second qualifying test Tuesday November 9 at Bristol Senior High. Eligible students ages 17 to 21 who graduate or will graduate by March 1 1944 may apply. The test is nonbinding and leads to government funded college training with future officer prospects.
