October Planting Time For Strawberries And Raspberries
The October window is ideal for planting strawberries and raspberries to gain spring advantage. Prepare soil to deter grubs with Chlordane, set strawberries 15 18 inches apart in rows four to five feet, and plant raspberries 30 inches apart in six foot rows with careful depth. After planting, mulch strawberries and mound soil around raspberries, then lift coverings in spring to allow light.
Bristol Harbor Shellfish Sweep Details Quahogs to Crabs
The Bristol harbor fishery yields seven edible shellfish species with quahogs leading in volume and value. Commercial fishermen use bullraking, tanging, power dredging and shore digging to harvest large and littlenecks, with large quahogs sent to Blount Seafood and Campbell's Soup after processing. Clams and scallops follow, then mussels and oysters once common, now scarce, while lobsters peak in July and August and crabs sustain most fishermen's income. Winkles or conchs round out the list as a growing delicacy.
