Deliverer of Hadley Rallying Defenders Under Fire
In early September 1675 during King Philip's War Old Hadley Massachusetts faced a sudden Indian assault while at worship. An unknown grave elderly man, later identified as General William Goffe, assumed command, rallied the townspeople, and routed the attackers before fading from view. He reportedly hid in Pastor John Russel’s home until his death about five years later. A state road now passes the site where Goffe inspired Hadley to defend the town.
