Increased Pay at Factories Amid War Cost of Living

In response to high living costs from global conditions, National India Rubber and Narragansett Rubber in town posted emergency 10 percent weekly wage increases starting next Monday, lasting until September 1 1917 with 30 days notice prior to discontinuance. Similar boosts were posted at Woonsocket and Millville plants, boosting payrolls by about $5,000 weekly combined. Col Samuel P Colt indicated United States Rubber Co subsidiaries would implement 10 percent bonuses across boots and shoes plants, potentially adding about $1,000,000 annually to payrolls nationwide and benefiting Rhode Island facilities. about 8,000 Rhode Island workers are employed in boots and shoes plants of the 15,000 total in 48 US Rubber plants.

Murder charge and assault case heard in Warren court

Antonio Carotunuti faced murder and assault with a dangerous weapon charges after a shooting at Mrs Albina Norton’s DeWolf avenue home on Oct 21. He was adjudged probably guilty and bound over to await the grand jury, with bail set at 1000.

Bristol K of C opens monthly series with talks and music

Bristol Council 379 Knights of Columbus held the first monthly event in their hall. About 75 members and guests attended as Cornelius F. Doyle spoke on experiences in the border and the Philippine Islands. Rev. Cahill and Rev. Hughes gave remarks. Past Grand Knight Joseph L. Duffy received a gold K of C ring from Grand Knight Reuben S. Dunn. The evening featured vocal solos, orchestra performance, and an oyster stew followed by a smoker.

Little Mothers' League plans holiday entertainment

A well attended Little Mothers' League and Home Craft Club meeting in the Byfield building after school hours set plans for a holiday entertainment. The prize story contest awarded first prize to Elizabeth Sanford, a special prize to Leonilda Sansone, and honorable mentions to Susie Walker and Molly Long. The winning story The Grey Automobile will appear in the Phoenix next issue.
