Examining Garden Traditions in Apple Pruning Practices
E P Christopher reviews a Vermont visit by Sherman Allen who shifts from traditional tall trees to 12 to 13 foot high trees to ease harvesting. He prefers low open canopies for better light, spray reach, and renewed bearing while noting staged pruning, stub retention, and eventual bark protection challenges. Aiming at home gardeners, the piece also hints at next year’s dust and spray options.
