Bristol Council of Defense plans unannounced daylight and blackout tests

The Bristol Council of Defense announced next week as part of NE air raid drill prep two unannounced daylight tests to occur Monday to Wednesday and two blackout tests on Thursday and Friday evenings. Tests are mobilization drills with no incidents. Wardens, auxiliary firemen, police, and rescue squads will report for duty.

Bullock Completes Naval Training at Newport

Robert H. Bullock 17 of 686 Hope Street has finished basic training at the Naval Training Station Newport and will enter a Quartermaster school. He is a Colt Memorial High School graduate and worked as a carpenter at Herre shoff Manufacturing. His brother Harry H. Bullock Jr. is a U S Army corporal.

Ration Board Grants New Permits for Vehicles and Tools

Farewell for Pasquale Mazzi Before Army Enlistment

Friends and relatives gathered Sunday evening at 335 High Street to bid farewell to Pasquale F Mazzi who entered the armed forces on November 13. He is the second son of Mr and Mrs A Mazza to join the military.

Two Bristol Boys Awarded Soldiers Medal for Heroism

Privates Henry W. Arouca and Virgin S. Sousa of Battery C 243rd RGNG Bristol were honored for rescuing the Navy plane crew after a crash off Beaver Tail Light in Narragansett Bay on September 4 1942. Sergeant William R. Pepin of Providence assisted. Both are former Boy Scouts with strong swimming and lifesaving backgrounds.

Postmaster Urges Early Christmas Mailing Plan

Postmaster Daniel W. Coggeshall appeals to the public to mail Christmas letters and parcels early and to address items clearly. He notes a record volume ahead, wartime strains on staffing and transport, and a 30 percent rise in free military mailing. The New York office handled 350,000 overseas parcels daily in late October.

Victory Corps program outlined for Bristol high school students

School Superintendent Emr S. Mapes detailed three service tracks Air Sea and Land for Victory Corps at Andrews High School. Courses include aviation science navigation shop work and physical fitness with guidance to steer students into proper service and opportunities for girls in community war work.

Suzman Leaves Bristol to Join U S Army

Robert B. Suzman, member of the Bristol War Price and Rationing Board and a men's clothing merchant, leaves to become a private in the U S Army. He is secretary of the Jewish Synagogue and active in civic life. his father was a Spanish-American War veteran and his brother Maynard is also in the Army. A farewell party at the Hotel Belvedere with 25 attendees featured remarks and a gift presentation.

Dr Frederick Y Martin Speaks on Illuminated Manuscripts

Dr Frederick Y Martin of Martin Hall spoke to the Bristol Chapter D A R on Illuminated Manuscripts. He showed over 400 year old hoked works painted by monks and noted they took about a century to complete.
