Legend of the White Sky Calf and Kiowa Sacred Bisons
Kiowa legend tells of a fertile desert once home to white buffaloes with black tails sacred to the tribe. An elder medicine man vowed to build a tepee from white skins, despite chiefs’ opposition. A luminous white calf descended from the sky, took charge of the herd, and led them north, after which white buffaloes were never seen in Kiowa lands.
