Bus Service Improvement Discussed At Joint Session

Public Utilities Administrator Thomas J Kennelly hosted a Bristol County planning meeting on bus service between here and Providence with town and state officials from Warren Barrington and Bristol County. N E Transportation Company officials attended and outlined new buses express schedules fare reductions shelters and routing changes with plans to seek public opinion and public utilities commission guidance before a subsequent joint session.

Fourth of July Group Plans Sub Display and Parade Returns

The Fourth of July Committee aims to display a captured German U Boat in Bristol Harbor during the celebration. They expect Navy Coast Guard Marine Corps and Army representation in the parade and plan vaudeville acts and events at the Bristol Yacht Club. Fireworks are cancelled this year to avoid local costs. Mrs William Gladding leads tag day efforts scheduled for June 20 or 30 with a series of dances to raise funds.

Memorial Services Scheduled For F O Cornelius Atkins

Friends of Fight Officer Cornelius J Atkins invite attendance at memorial services at Grace Church Providence on Thursday May 31 at 4 30 pm. Atkins a co pilot on a B 24 based with the 8th AAF in England was killed in action in Germany on May 7 after his plane crashed. He was overseas since March and had completed five missions prior. Born August 23 1924 in Atlanta he lived in Bristol and Harrisville since age four. He attended Moses Brown and Middlesex School and spent a freshman year at Harvard. He worked at Walsh Kaiser Shipyard before entering service on May 25 1943. He is survived by his parents Morris and Hope Phinney and Ruth and two sisters.

A letter to Pfc Manuel C Silvia’s wife reports his liberation by Russian forces on April 23 after capture on December 24. Louis F DiMezza a cook second class in the US Navy returned home to 224 Wood Street for a 30 day leave Sunday afternoon after 23 months away aboard ships in the European area. He had just visited many relatives in Italy and saw the house where his father was born.

Fire Chief Moses M. Moore says the district fire alarm system is temporarily out of order. In a fire, the district number will be hand controlled by U S Rubber Company. The whistle tone will vary and blast lengths may be inconsistent.

Red Cross Reports Arrival of Surgical Dressings Quota

The Bristol Red Cross announces a quota of 12 000 surgical dressings at headquarters led by Mrs Henry Wood. Three weeks are allotted for the quota with rooms open Thursday at 10 am and hours 10 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday and 6 30 pm to 9 pm Monday to Wednesday.
