Judge Edward L. Leahy announced he accepted the appointment to represent the town at the Bristol Brighton observance. He will leave New York Saturday on the S. S. Rex and visit several European cities before going to Bristol England.
The town appropriates funds for a week long England visit in June 1723. Judge Leahy will sail from New York on the SS Rex on Saturday the 9th, visiting Genoa Rome Naples Florence Venice Geneva Paris London and Bristol before Ireland. He travels as the town’s representative at his own expense.
Jose Victoria and Miss Marvy Mason were chosen to give the valedictorian and salutatorian addresses at Colt Memorial High School graduation on June 22. Principal Edward J Fitzgerald announced the selections. Victoria, son of Mr and Mrs John Victoria, and Mason, daughter of Mr and Mrs F O Wilbur Mason, are in the college preparatory program and have strong averages. Victoria has a four year general average of 90.22 and Mason 89. They reside on Doran Avenue and Meetacom Avenue respectively.
Postmaster Van MPO Connery announces Memorial Day closures for city routes rural deliveries and general delivery. Stamp windows and all casino mail dispatch functions will be closed. Monexs order and registry divisions and the postal savings system shut all day. Lobby hours 7 am to 6 pm.
Memorial Day program schedules a 9 am assembly at Grand Army Hall for FOR MEMORIAL DAY SPECIAL ORDER No 2 Babbitt Post No 15 and invited groups. The parade proceeds to North Cemetery and Soldiers Lot with services, wreaths, taps, and readings led by GAR officers, Battery 243rd Coast Artillery, and local veterans groups.
A Tadics Auxiliars Unit sale in Kearney Post No 6 Ameri can Legion sold 600 poppies in five hours on a two day drive. Mrs Walter Carr led the labor. the event raised over 75 dollars for veterans hospitalization work. Roselma I. Desilets earned 24 dollars in the effort, with Joseph Waines among top sellers.
Ten senior members of Goldenrod Troop along with Captain Mrs Predenck S Bartlett and Lieutenant Mrs T Prancis spent the weekend at Camp Hoffman, West Kingston. Local Scouts from town included Viola Le Clerc, Leah Eisenstadtsther Hazen, Jessie Sanford Pegrs Mathewson, Nanes Cortellessa, Aida Malafronte, Lavina Guevremont, Mary Walsh, and Barbara Huestis.
A fragmented reminiscence recalling the Bull Run campaign of 1861. The speaker recalls marching with Stonewall Jackson, a battlefield injury leaving a peg leg, and comrades who fell or fled under fire. The piece mixes marching memory with a southern voice and wartime imagery.
More than 200 members and guests attended the annual Junior Prom at Colt Memorial High School auditorium on Friday evening. The event featured red and gold decorations, dancing to Sarazven’s orchestra and a grand march led by Edward Sousa and Miss Touch Weaver. Patrons included Supt of Schools Harry W. Monroe and Mrs Elmer S Mapes, Principal Pdwoerd J Fitzgerald, Miss Ethel Walmsley, and Boston Mass residents John L Burke Anna Vatajalo, John Howland, and Margaret Cawley. Refreshments were served during intermission by a committee of class officers and sponsors.
June 8 a Cotton Ball hosted by the Portuguese American Civic League at Bristol Casino. June 9 the 3 act comedy Happy Go Lucky presented by BTA Entertainment Association in the Guiteras Auditorium.
Rev Milton J King of St Mary's Church invited as chaplain of the day for July 4th observances. Dwyer announces Firemen's League to sponsor hose coupling contest with 20 fire companies expected from state. Semi finals of water battle to be held in Bristol County. Senators Metcalf and Condon seek Navy destroyer for Bristol harbor. Audrey Munro renewed invitation to sing at patriotic exercises. Block party planned. merchants to sponsor. Scout leaders urged to bring units for parade. progress noted on music and boxing committees.
Mt Carmel Church held its annual May Procession with nearly 200 participants including 129 children who recently received first Holy Communion. Altar boys and acolytes led a parade from the parish hall on Congregational Street to Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church on State Street for sermons benediction and a packed service in white dresses veils and dark suits with white armbands.
The St Marys Parochial School class of 1931 presented The Jolls Juvenile minstrels in the church, staged for the parish fund. A range of amateur thespians aged 5 to 16 performed with end men, dances, solos, and an in charge by Miss Regina Farley and Mrs Eloise Dunbar. The event featured dialogue by Alfred LaRue and a full orchestra with William Sisson, Anthony Rallo, Salvatore Giglio, Frank Campagna, and Charles Sarting Jr.
Lucien Capone of this town is among 16 of 52 graduates who passed the Rhode Island Bar exam. He will be sworn in before the Supreme Court on Monday, June 5, after receiving early education in the town.
Capone, son of Mr and Mrs Matthew Capone of 3 Usher Street, Bristol, will appear before the Supreme Court on Monday, June 5, to be sworn in. Born in New York, he has resided in Bristol since boyhood, graduated Colt Memorial High School in 1921 as salutatorian, attended Brown University for three years, earned a Bachelor of Laws at Northeastern in 1932, and has worked as a clerk at Voight, Wright and Munroe. He is 30, married to Louise Malafronte, with one son, a Bristol Lions Club charter member and Bristol Chamber of Commerce member.
Local businessmen and a patriotic group back a tag day to fund a newly organized junior baseball league opening season on Wednesday June 7. The group plans weekend tag events to support organized recreation for youngsters with games at Bristol common on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Manager Frazee's Ever Ready baseball club will play a game tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock against a Warren lineup. As the only sporting event listed for Memorial Day, the matchup is expected to draw a large crowd.
