A Sunday early morning fire near Jeanette's Record Shop and Cavalo Fish Market on Wood Street near State was ruled incendiary. Fire Chief Moses Moore and crews contained the blaze between two sheds with stock saved by bystanders including Morris Leahy Elmer Angell Jr Philip Sansone and others. Michael Ruggieri Receives Purple Heart for Okinawa Wounds
Michael Ruggieri, Ship's Cook First Class USNR, son of John Ruggieri of 495 Wood Street, is awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered aboard the USS Halsey Powell during operations with the Third Fleet off Okinawa on March 20, 1945. The ship was struck by enemy planes and shrapnel injuries were incurred.

Memorial Day tribute by Old 106 and a waving boy
A Chicago and North Western train known as Old 106 stops two miles west of Elrod, South Dakota each Memorial Day to honor a boy who waved from the embankment and the conductor who waved back. The ritual began with Conductor W F Chambers, who learned of the boy's death and preserved the salute by placing flowers at the grave for forty years, a tradition continued after his death by the line’s conductors to honor an unseen bond.
