Incinerator cost estimate discussed by Bristol council

Bristol Town Council hears that the incinerator may require more than the $40,000 already appropriated. Council members study Warwick’s experience, consult manufacturers, and plan visits to Newport Providence and Fall River incinerators to gather contour maps and further details.

Councilman Serbst Denies Budget Committee Defiance

Councilman Henry F Serbst told the Tuesday session that he was not defying the Budget Committee by proposing Charles street construction. He argued highway funds have long included Charles street and noted prior sewer and water requests were unmet. he defended the $1,600 cost and cited Roma street and Wood street curb figures as comparisons.

Mt Carmel CYO travels to Fall River for a return game against St Patrick. They previously edged the Saints 5 4 after a Saints error in the seventh inning. Sunday doubleheader at Victory Field Barrington against Holy Angels at 2 30 pm.

Morrissey Named Theatre Group Chairman at YMCA Meeting

Donald F Morrissey former publicity director for the Bristol Community Theatre Group was named Chairman at a YMCA meeting. Mrs James M Husband was named to succeed him. Other officers include Earl P Mathewson treasurer Dr Ralph F Kinder director S Morton Giley secretary Mrs Joseph C Kinder Production chairman D Lloyd Smith. A June 4 script reading of the mystery Double Door is planned with one act There’s Always Juliet directed by D Lloyd Smith and a forthcoming musical. Refreshments were served by Morrissey and Mrs Joseph F Kinder. Bobby Kinder, a young magician, entertained the attendees.

Alumni Veterans Speak At I Am An American Day

Four Bristol High School alumni, all armed forces veterans, spoke at the I Am An American Day assembly. Capt Raymond McNamara, TS Joseph Mazza, Lt (jg) Angelo Massa, and Major Raymond Makowsky shared views on being American abroad and returning home.

Smoke Stack Will Be Raised To Cut Factory Nuisance

At a Tuesday Town Council meeting United States Rubber Company officials discussed raising the smoke stack to reduce a nuisance. Factory Manager Wesley Armstrong said the step would proceed but could not promise elimination. An engineer will be hired to study the problem and report at the next council session. Residents from Franklin Street August Pedro and 2 Buttonwood Street Benjamin Cruz protested, saying stack height would improve conditions.

Degrees Conferred On Twelve Candidates by Bristol Council

Twelve candidates of the Bristol Council Knights of Columbus received the first and second degrees at a Wednesday night meeting on State Street. A degree team from St Anthony's Council Providence conferred the degrees. A special meeting is set for May 29, and on June 2 the local Council will confer the third degree on the candidates.

Annual Memorial Service and Parade Planned in Bristol

The Community Memorial Service will be Sunday evening at First Baptist Church at 7 30 with Rev Arthur W Burdon delivering the sermon and a reading of the Bristol men who died in service. The Memorial Day parade forms at 9 in front of the GAR Hall with Brig Gen Samuel A Hall as chief marshal and a Bristol Senior High Band performance.

St Marys Parish Reunion names general committee

A. C. Nerone announces Augustine C Nerone as chairman of the general committee for St Marys Parish Reunion. The list includes Leon Dobridnia Charles McHugh Charles Connery Thomas Byrnes Jr and many others. The first meeting is set for Monday May 27 at 8 p m in the Knights of Columbus Hall to draft plans and appoint sub committees. The event will be held on a Sunday in July at a yet to be chosen location.

New District Court Clerk Appointed in Fifth District

Saboteur danger spotted by Newport superintendent

Col Harold Lowe, Newport school superintendent, recounted a wartime saboteur scare at New York Harbor. Watching from a cliff edge near the Staten Island piers, he spotted a signaling flashlight and organized searches that exposed a glassed observation post manned by a retired sea captain and accomplices. Authorities arrested the group, highlighting tensions in wartime security.
