A newly formed Handwriting Foundation in Washington seeks to curb unreadable handwriting that hinders mail delivery and business. It cites examples from telephone bills and job applications where illegible writing prevents charges and processing, proposing solutions to restore legibility.
About 200 people attended the Eighth Annual Cotton Ball held in the school auditorium hosted by the Children of Mary Sodality of St Elizabeth's Church. Prizes for prettiest gowns went to Miss Mary Mitchell of Fall River first, and Mrs Joseph Costa and Mrs James Sousa of this town second and third.
The Handwriting Foundation warns 70 million dollars in U.S. business losses last year due to unreadable writing. A 10 ton submarine cable was successfully laid between Bristol Narrows and Touisset Point by two New England Tel and Tel Co crews. The Civic Industry Committee seeks garment trade workers including sewing machine operators hand sewers cutters and pressers to fill out simple forms. Forms are at the Town Clerk’s Office State Unemployment Office Court House Phoenix Office Duffy’s Store Mally’s Pharmacy and Giusti’s Spa.
The recreation board named Joseph A Murgo as engineer to survey the 26 acre Colt Estate site on Asylum road. He will determine grades and fill level for the town beach and the board plans immediate sanitary work, beach cleaning and opening the facility. Off site bathers will pay parking fees similar to Warren Town Beach while a full set of rules on parking use and concessions will be issued before opening. State aid for lifeguards is still being pursued with help from the town's General Assembly delegates.
The Chestmobile X-ray unit visits Bristol for the first three Thursdays and Fridays in June, stationed on Bradford Street in front of Andrews School. It operates under the State Health Department Tuberculosis control with local sponsors and schedules at industrial plants and Rockwell School will be announced soon.
The G A Winter Co of East Providence won the contract to supply five grades of tar and asphalt for 80,000 gallons. Brito Construction Co and Rego and Sons Construction Co secured bids for gravel sand and related materials. Winter offered 113 cents per gallon on MC asphalt and 11.3 cents on other grades with a 2 percent prompt payment discount.
Civic Industries Committee consultant Saul Ricklin told Portsmouth council that a proposed oil refinery could boost Bristol area employment and support local service businesses. He cited Collins and Aikman Corpora tion’s idle plant as a key obstacle and noted three groups are eyeing the C&A property while the refinery could spur plastics and chemical product manufacture and work for local machine shops and contractors.
