King Philip Fire Engine Company Moves Quarters
King Philip Fire Engine Company No 1 vacated Thames Street station following an order by the Town Council and relocated to a building north of the Staples Coal Company office. The move places a piano pool table and much of the furniture in the new quarters while the hand engine is kept at Bristol Auto Shop. The older King Philip Fire Company No 4, renamed in 1873, has long served Bristol. Foreman Joseph Gladue has led for 24 years and Wilfred Guevremont has been first assistant for 26. The White auto fire truck remains at the station and will be run by 11 volunteers until a new company is formed, to be considered by the Board of Fire Engineers next Monday evening. Community leaders debate whether the old building should be repurposed for town offices or used as a police station to ease Burnside Memorial crowding.
