Here's Your Infantry staged for 7th War Loan drive

"Here's Your Infantry" will be staged at Burrs Hill Park Warren on June 6. Carl H Witherell Bristol 7th War Loan Committee chairman says the action packed show re creates an attack on a Jap pillbox with flame throwers grenades and rifles. He invites all and notes house to house solicitation on Sunday June 10 with two drives planned this year. Bonds will be sold in local schools during open house May 22 and 23.

Anthony Almeida VFW Post Formed With Local Veterans

A VFW post named after Anthony C Almeida was formed by 35 overseas veterans of World Wars I and II in Odd Fellows Hall. Charter members will be submitted to National Headquarters in Kansas City and the charter kept open six months for more members.

Rockwell 3rd Promoted in German Field Army Unit

Charles B. Rockwell III, son of Mr and Mrs Charles B. Rockwell of Point Pleasant Poppasquash, promoted from private first class to second lieutenant in the field in Germany. He serves with an Army medical unit and is on duty there.

S Sgt Fred Lopes Returns Home From Army Discharge

S Sgt Fred Lopes of 45 Oliver Street is discharged under the new point rating system after 47 months in the Army. He served with the Fourth Infantry Division in the European Theatre and held the Bronze Star and Silver Star. Lopes plans civilian work, study, and possible agriculture study at Rhode Island State College.

Bristol Soldier James Serpa Killed in Action in Italy

Pvt. James P. Serpa 23, son of Mr and Mrs Manuel Serpa of 60 Rosita Avenue, was killed in action in Italy on April 23. He served with the Fifth Army after earlier action in Africa Oran Corsica and Sicily. A Bristol native, he worked for Bristol Manufacturing Corp before enlistment and had also been with Collins and Aikman. His brother Manuel P. Serpa is in the Army in Germany overseas two years.

Archie P. Allen resigns as instructor of physical education and athletic coach at Bristol Senior High School to become head coach in Binghamton New York. Natalie Dailey also resigns to teach in Newport Rhode Island. Ralph K. Nash chosen to replace Allen at 2100 dollars salary plus 100 dollar bonus. James F Meiggs was re elected chairman of the Fourth of July Committee at a Burnside Memorial Building meeting. A block dance the night before the Fourth and a parade with patriotic exercises are planned plus an afternoon sports program. The group expressed sympathy for Meiggs over the death of his son Andrew in action.

Sgt J M Donovan Wounded On Okinawa

Sgt Jerome M Donovan son of Mrs Lillian M Donovan of 14 Lincoln Avenue was wounded in action on Okinawa April 28. A member of New York 77th Statue of Liberty Division since 1942, he served with the Army 1st Amphibious Training Command and fought in Guam Leyte Kerama Islands and Okinawa. A Bristol native, he graduated Colt Memorial High in 1938 winning the Brightman Memorial Medal and worked for Collins and Aikman before enlisting.

Escaped Soldiers Recall Bulge Siege and Narrow Breakout

Sgt Albert Del Toro and about 600 men describe their escape from encirclement near the Battle of the Bulge. With scarce ammo and three machine guns set, they faced surrender before a sudden rescue by an officer who argued against mass murder. The group endured captivity and starvation, vowing to appreciate food upon return.

Recreation Board To Consider Applicants

The Recreation Board will meet next Tuesday to consider applications for the supervisor of the playground on the Common during the summer vacation. As yet no applications have been received. Hubert F. Hill, chairman, said Saturday is the deadline. The supervisor will oversee daily activities plan events and run a ten week balanced program.

Body Of Cambridge Woman Found Off Prudence Island

The body of Mrs. Rosalind Gray Potter 33 Brewster Street Cambridge Mass was found off Prudence Island after her car was located abandoned on Mt Hope Bridge. The vehicle contained her coat handbag and cane and the Portsmouth police took custody of the scene. Death was ruled as self inflicted by Dr Charles Bryant medical examiner in a case handled as a suicide.

Mother's Day brought happiness to Mrs. Ralph Abenante of 60 Mt Hope Ave as her son Pasquale Abenante Seaman Ic returned from two years in the Pacific on a 30 day leave. Her son-in-law Arthur DeFusco Seaman Sc also arrived on leave, marking the first meeting in over two years.
