Alphonse Vermette Dies Unexpectedly at 53 in Bristol

Retired business man Alphonse Vermette died yesterday at 410 Thames Street after a brief illness. Funeral services are set for tomorrow morning at St Mary’s Church with a requiem mass and interment in St Mary’s Cemetery. He leaves a wife two daughters and two sons plus four brothers and two sisters. He was born in St Joachim Ontario and lived in Bristol for 38 years.

The illustrated volume uses family papers and new insights to present Cooper beyond his published works, including a full length portrait and personal life details. Boynton, noted biographer of Washington Irving and Bret Harte, explains the book grew from a discovery that Cooper remained little known in his private life.

Miss Ruggiero Hosts Pink Green White Shower

Dora L Ruggiero, soon to wed on June 3, hosted a miscellaneous shower at her 404 Wood Street residence. Forty friends attended, enjoying games, music, and a collation, with many gifts and best wishes. The event was organized by Mrs John R Bernardo and Miss Theresa Ruggiero, her sister.

Chamber of Commerce Elects New Officers for Coming Year

Bristol Chamber of Commerce names George H Baldwin president for the coming year at the annual meeting held at Reynolds School. New officers include John R Magee vice president Fred E Suzman treasurer and Roswell S Bosworth secretary. The board names C C Getchell retiring president M C Smith Jr Sebastian Bernard and Joseph R Perroni as directors. Dues reduced to ten dollars with credits for prior payments. A new road project Bristol Warren is urged with state road board and local clubs asked to cooperate. The first annual banquet is set for Tuesday May 26 without charge to paid up members.

Bristol Town Team to Host Esmond Towmes at Bliven Field

Children Receive First Holy Communion at St Mary’s

A class of four children celebrated their first Holy Communion at St Mary’s Church during the 8 o’clock Mass yesterday morning. The pastor Rev Thomas Jallan addressed them on the occasion’s significance while relatives and friends looked on. The girls wore white dresses with wreaths and veils. the boys in dark clothes with white ribbons on their left arms. After the service the children were enrolled on scapulars.

Sir Hubert Wilkins to Speak on A. P. Program

Sir Hubert Wilkins polar explorer will discuss the part food plays in polar exploration on the A and P program tomorrow morning. He sails aboard the Nautilus and will describe the difficulties of feeding a polar expedition and the challenges faced in Arctic travel.

Newport and Bristol Bowlers Make Merry

Bristol and Newport Lions Clubs bowling teams and friends gathered Tuesday at the Wanumetonomy Golf and Country Club for a banquet. Dan Rose of Providence gave remarks as the principal speaker while James Lanzire of Bristol served as toastmaster and presented the Newport team captain Doc Farnum with a silver loving cup.

First Aid Badges Given to Girl Scouts at Eagles Hall

Nine Girl Scouts earned first aid badges at a Scouts of Eagles Hall meeting on Wednesday afternoon. Honored were Esther Hazen Barbara Huestis Marguerite Mathewson Dorothea Davin Leonora de Rocha Uzelle de Rocha Aida Malafronte Virginia Scott and Nancy Cortelessa. Miss Elizabeth Gurney NR presented the badges and nurses from Bristol District Nursing Association received scrapbooks of Girl Scout pictures for use at children’s clinics at Rockwell Home. Bristol Girl Scouts are selling tickets for the pageant Aladdin and His Magic Lamp of Dreams to be held in Infantry Hall Providence next Thursday evening May 21.

The Fourth of July Committee appointed by the Town Council will meet this evening in the Burnside Memorial Building council chamber. Forty four were appointed but not all have qualified at the Town Clerk's office.

Bristol Bay To Be On Airship In First Trip

John E. Leahy son of Capt Thomas F. Leahy will join the crew of the Akron giant U S Navy airship nearing completion in Akron Ohio for its first sky voyage The 35 year old served overseas in World War I and previously worked on the Los Angeles airship He joins a war strength crew of 75 with prior experience on the Shenandoah B-38 and Los Angeles positioned at the Howden England base Lakehurst and other Navy airships

Zoning Board approves Millard tea room at 50 Franklin

May term of Bristol County Superior Court will convene in Providence a week after May 25 with Judge Pouliot presiding. A sizable civil docket is expected and several applicants will appear for naturalization.
