NC-4 Day Flight Stirs Washington Commemoration

In Washington yesterday a celebration recalled NC-4 Day with stops at St Michael s Azores and publicity on the 45 body of the plane. Local men helped build the aircraft led by ground crew member Charles Callan while Admiral Gilbert C Hoover served as lieutenant and witnessed the flight from a battleship acting as a patrol vessel for the voyage.

Bristol Men Join 50th NC4 Commemoration in DC

T P Brightman and Harry Town, who helped build the NC4 in 1918 at Herreshoff Mfg Co, attended ceremonies in Washington DC marking the 50th anniversary of the first Atlantic cross. They joined guests at events sponsored by the Navy and Smithsonian Institution with attendees including the Phoenix editor.

Pontifical Mass to mark St. Mary’s 100th anniversary

On May 11 a low pontifical Mass at 11 a.m. will be celebrated by Bishop Russell J. McVinney to consecrate the altar. A centennial banquet at 6 p.m. at the National Guard Armory will reunite former parishioners, with Rev. Robert C. Newbold as guest speaker. The souvenir booklet features St. Mary’s history from 1869 to present.
