Bristol Byfield School Dedication Honors in 1873

The 1873 dedication of the Byfield School in Bristol featured speakers such as Rev. Dr. Thomas Shepard and Gen. Ambrose Burnside. A life size portrait of Col. Nathaniel Byfield, painted by Jane Stuart, was unveiled. The occasion included the dedication ode by Rev. M A DeW Howe and the Do xology. The school opened October 1871 with total cost $45,000.

Three Musketeers Celebrate 30th Year of Postal Service

Ten year old Sheila Guaniere of 24 Doran Avenue won popular vote on WJAR TV New England Talent Club after a piano audition in Bristol. She began piano at age three, studies with Jose da Costa in New Bedford, and travels weekly for lessons. Her family supports her rising fame and she is backed by shows in local clubs through her father and uncle.

Huestis Lace Co Honored With State Safety Awards

Two Bristol industrial firms received state safety honors for years with no employee lost days due to accidents. J. Floyd Huestis Inc and Bristol Lace Works were awarded by the Division of Inspection and Safety, State Department of Labor, at Providence Rehabilitation Center on Blackstone Boulevard. Representatives attended a luncheon and toured the center.

Mrs Rego to Be Honored as Mother of the Year

Mrs Maria L. Rego widow of Manuel Co Rego and mother of John L. Rego is named Mother of the Year by Bristol Aerie FOE. The award will be presented at Midway Steak and Lobster House, with new aerie officers installed. Her nine of twelve children include Manuel V, Mary Quimby, Joseph G, John L, William A, James G, Christopher G, Howard, Anthony E. Her son William will be installed as worthy president. other officers and trustees listed.

Democrat State Chairman Talks Here on May 16

Frank Rae, chair of the Democratic State Committee, will be the principal speaker at the Democratic victory dinner on May 16 honoring victors in the March 9 town election. Probate Judge Frank L. Martin will be toastmaster. Monsignor Charles H. Lynch will deliver the invocation and benediction. Tickets are being sold by a committee led by Edward S. Pontes at the Midway Steak and Lobster House.

Entire 243rd Battalion Here on 4th Parade Entry

The 243rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion of the Rhode Island National Guard, about 400 officers and men from Providence Woon socket Newport and Bristol, will march in the Fourth of July parade. Lt Col Everett E McMillan commands. The unit to be tested at Camp Wellfleet Mass before on site artillery duties, with 88th Army Band providing music.

275th Committee Seeks Shared Use of Common for Carnival

The 275th Anniversary finance committee will request permission from the town council to use the common for a September carnival and asks aid to control venders. They plan an advertising program at 40 dollars per page, private subscriptions, bumper sticker sales, and a letter draft by a subcommittee. The revised schedule lists events from Sept 17 to Sept 24 including a parade and fireworks.

Town Roads Aid Beach Project Cutting Drainage Costs

The town public works department will fill a swampy area at the new town beach using fill from digging road bases. Carmine C Cirillo, chairman of the recreation board, says the cooperation saves taxpayers money by avoiding payment for fill, which costs about $1 per cubic yard. Hundreds of fill yards will be dumped at the site as part of the highway rebuilding effort.

Old Dan Coggeshall Dies at 92 Former Senator of Bristol

Daniel G Coggeshall longtime Bristol official and former state senator died this morning at 117 Constitution Street in his 93rd year after months of illness. He served as postmaster and chaired the board of tax assessors for 25 years and led Bristol fire department as chief. Survived by son Daniel W Coggeshall daughter Mrs Northan of Plano Illinois and grandsons Albert and Daniel Bailey. Funeral plans not yet made.
