Big New York stamp show overwhelms crowds at Coliseum

Stamp collectors from over sixty nations pack the Fifth International Philatelic Exhibition FIPEX at the Coliseum with a vast display including the sole known copy of the British Guiana 1-cent stamp. A 10 year old TV figure Leonard Ross joins the event as Postmaster General Summerfield praises philately for heritage and international goodwill.

Heritage Week opens four Bristol sites for public view

Tomorrow four Bristol locations join Rhode Island Heritage Week with tours from 3 to 5 30 pm at The Farm Griswold Avenue and Herreshoff Homestead Hope Street plus the Herreshoff Model Room 125 Hope Street. The Bristol Historical Society museum hosts 230 to 500 pm exhibits tomorrow and the Haffenreffer Museum opens Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. The week peak is Rhode Island Independence Day 180th observance with many state sites open. The program is led by David Patten with cooperation from the Rhode Island Development Council. The Bristol exhibits focus on early Indian life and the Herreshoff legacy. The historical society exhibits feature an American Indian loan from the Haffenreffer collection and Bristol history artifacts, plus the Rogers Building exhibit room reopening. The Colonel Stevens collection includes stones minerals and Indian texts donated by Col Samuel P. Colt. The Herreshoff Homestead showcases family antiques prepared by Norman F. Herreshoff and restorations by Rocco Migliori. The model room in Sidney DeW Herreshoff’s home displays half models of Bristol boats and cup defender originals, with Capt Nathanael Herreshoff tools on display.

Y Softball League Opens Season With Meeting Tonight

The YMCA Industrial Softball League will hold its first meeting of the 1956 season tonight at the Y at 7 30. Alec Anderton, league president, says teams will be organized for the season. Last year Boccia Club Murphy Oil U S Rubber Bristolites and Bristol Council Knights of Columbus competed. The Boccia Club has won the title the last two years. The Red Cross executive committee will meet tonight at 7 30 at the Y.

Withdrawal of Bid on East State Street Project

The lowest bidder J Baccala and Sons Construction Co of Providence has withdrawn its bid for widening East State Street between Wood and First School streets, awarded April 9. Civic Industries Group Meeting Postponed Due to Quorum

A Civic Industries Committee meeting scheduled for last night was postponed until next week because a quorum was not present. Those present included chairman Anthony Pinheiro consultant Saul Ricklin councilman Jerome Donovan J Francis Connell and Mrs Charlotte Makowsky as the group plans reorganization.

Beals Clarifies Town Meeting Payment Error

Donovan Says He's Not Running for Town Council

Jerome M. Donovan, third councilman and fire commissioner since March 1953, will not seek reelection. In a letter to Democratic nominating chair Michael Parisi, he cites personal considerations but hopes to run again on the Democratic ticket in the future. He will remain on the town Democratic committee.

MIT Names Two Doctors to Medical Staff

Massachusetts Institute of Technology announced the appointment of Dr. Samuel D. Shark and Dr. Le Moyne White to the MIT medical staff. Dr. Shark, from Bristol, will join in September. Dr. White from Massachusetts General Hospital will join in July and will head the psychiatric section. Dr. Clark, a Bristol physician, will join as a full-time staff member.

State Pier funds pass legislature in Bristol

The Rhode Island House approved a 50 000 allocation for a pleasure boat pier at the armory pier on Church Street. The measure shifts oversight to the state division of fish and game and adds a marine patrol station at Battery C. Bristol officials pursue federal breakwater funds as the harbor plan advances with support from Rep Gladys Brightman Sen Anthony DaPonte Sen John McWeeney and Gov Dennis Roberts expected to sign soon.

J C Award Is Made For Roswell S Bosworth Jr

The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Roswell S. Bosworth Jr managing editor of the Bristol Phoenix at a Jaycees dinner in the Harriet Bradford Hotel. Bosworth, Bristol harbor development commission chairman, was honored for promoting waterfront improvements and public access projects. He also helped organize the New England Weekly Press Association and the Rhode Island Press Club, and created the Newsmakers program on WJAR TV.

Bristol Town Council Youth Day Elects Ten High School Students

A Bristol Senior High School youth council of ten students unanimously voted to ask the tax assessors to accept a $25,000 town revaluation survey and proposed a second bid period to purchase the former telephone building for $18,000. They endorsed a hurricane barrier, harbor development at State Street Wharf and Rockwell Park, and added wings to the town hall. Attendants included Joseph Margo Lorraine Silvia Victor Andrade Ronald Formisano and Domenic Franco. City officials Robert Leahy Diolinda Abilhiera John Sousa Christine Cortellessa Joseph Motta joined the welcome at 9 30 am with Elks Lodge sponsoring Youth Day activities and a party planned at the Club this evening.
