Taxpayers show strong interest in local government and the Budget Committee. The annual financial town meeting will be held at John Post Reynolds School at 7 30 p m with Moderator Edward L Leahy presiding. About 400 to 500 signatures accompany a petition for paper ballots on larger appropriations.
The Doric Club and Mount Hope Chapter sponsor an amateur night at Guiteras Memorial Junior High School auditorium. Seventeen entries include fourteen young female acts and three male contenders led by Nick Ascoli George Vento and Anthony Ascoli.
Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church junior choir organizes a Shamrock whist in the parish hall to raise funds for a new organ. Mrs Vasta La Ruggiero leads the arrangements with sub committees handling hall, candy, and prizes.
Nicola Tartaglione known as Big Nick and a Bristol street figure died at his home 105 Spruce Street after pneumonia at age 55. Funeral from Mt. Carmel Church Atwell's Avenue Providence drew thousands as 11 men and police moved the body from his home to a store.
Two Bristol women were seriously injured Tuesday evening when struck by an automobile while crossing Wood street near Union street after a mission at St Marys Church. Mrs James Barry 68 and Miss Bridget McHugh sustained multiple injuries and were treated by doctors. Edgar W Phillips 17 admitted driving slowly due to rain and stopped after the impact.
In a quiet vote Bristol Democrats gain strength with Cantwell Hamill Saviano and Mrs Andrade winning four school board seats. The turnout sees Cantwell and Saviano secure multi term seats while Andrade edges Munro for a four year term. Four town council incumbents win re election and other local posts are filled. Democratic organization mobilizes 30 cars and 60 volunteers for polling day.
Sea Scouts of Kearney complete plans for the third annual St Patrick's dance to be held tomorrow evening at Grand Army Hall Hope Street. The dance staff includes Arthur Belmore and Charles Silvia. recent training awarded diplomas in leadership and equipment construction. A veterans unit is planned to form a Life Saving Corps and recruit more Boy Scouts.
Bristo Colt Alumni Association hosts a novelty St Patrick's party in Colt Auditorium with a noted orchestra. Committee includes J L Rego as chairman and others. Monday night The American Legion Kearney Post No 6 plans a similar Bristol Casino dance with Legionnaires and guests from across the state and Casino Orchestra. Alexander Edmonds chairs that committee with Fred Garvin treasurer and others.
George A Mescall former Bristol resident died in Homedale Idaho Monday at age 24 or 25 after an acute appendicitis attack. He lived in Bristol since childhood then moved to Idaho four years ago to raise livestock. Funeral services were held and burial followed in Homedale. Survivors include his wife Mildred, a brother Vincent J Mescall and an aunt Mrs Joseph Warren.
In the annual School Department report, Superintendent E S Mapes notes lingering questions about sustaining low costs for textbooks and supplies as paper prices rise, warns of crowding at Guiteras Memorial Junior High, and mentions potential staff additions. He commends Bristol teachers for professional dedication despite salary reductions since 1931 and highlights economies achieved over five years across school divisions.
