Fishermen Seek Lower State License Fee Change

Local shellfishermen from Tiverton Warren Warwick East Greenwich sign petitions urging a cut in the state shellfish license from 25 to 2 dollars. They cite hardship as licenses drop from 905 to 2487 since 1956 and note funds fund the Stormy Weather transplant boat. The Shellfish Advisory Committee recently voted to keep the 25 dollar fee.

Red Cross Drive Captains Named

Zone captains for the Red Cross drive house to house canvassing were announced today by canvas chairman James Rielly. They include Mesdames Moren Almeida Securo Canario Mala fronte Powers Sturdevant and Misses Burke Morris Machado Laucier, plus Rounds Baker 3rd Luther and DaPonte. The captains will meet tonight at 8 p.m. at the YMCA for a coffee hour to discuss plans for the appeal.

High School Plans Delayed by Three Years

The Planning Board and School Committee reviewed enlarging the high school or building a new one but Supt Edward J. Fitzgerald forecast no construction in the next three years due to design, funding, and construction hurdles. Three options were discussed: rear Colt School site, Andrews School site, or a completely new plant. The first step is architectural advice to determine costs, with a roughly $4,400 reserve fund available.

Fales Road Ownership Dispute Over Boat Launch Site

A Rhode Island dispute centers on whether the Fales Road shore end is public for launching boats. A state booklet listed the site as public alongside Narrows Road and State Street, while resident Frank Balzano claims the shore end is private property.
