Harold I. June visits Panama to address Legionnaires as reported by The Star and Herald Panama Canal Zone. The clipping was received by B. W Wall from Chief Petty Officer Robert Kelley, formerly stationed at Newport.
Harold I June, chief aviation pilot who flew with Admiral Byrd to the South Pole, will speak at the Elbert S. Ward Post No. 2 American Legion Navy Night meeting on March 2 at the Veterans' Club in Colon Beach. He will discuss his polar expedition experiences and initiate Navy members into the post.
Attendance figures for February 1931 show Colt High School with 97.37 percent topping all schools. Guiteras School records 94.59 percent, followed by Reynolds 93.58 and Byfield 92.69 as the system reports monthly attendance standings.
A fire likely from a motor short circuit fed by an automatic blower damaged the interior of the Callan Construction blacksmith shop at Roma street. Four companies fought the blaze, two hose lines used, employees moved fuel oil barrels, Brig Gen LH Callan valued damages at about 2000 dollars insured.
Joseph Franco of King Philip Avenue pleaded not guilty before Judge Lindemuth to larceny of a radiator cap valued at $12, the property of Morris Phinney. The case was continued two weeks. Albert Tavares of South Main Street, Warren, pleaded not guilty to operating a motor vehicle under the influence. bail set at $500 and case continued two weeks. Civil docket: Wardwell Lumber Co. vs William Northup, book account, judgment for $2.74. Jack Tasares vs Frank Moura alias Michael Pedro et al., book account, judgment for $125.
Rev William Porter Niles, rector of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Nashua New Hampshire, will preach at St Michael's Church during Lenten services tomorrow evening. Last year he preached the Three Hour Service on Good Friday for the combined Episcopal Churches of Newport.
The Budget Commission releases its first report proposing an overall 316 442 01 budget with major reductions in School and Public Aid departments and a shift to efficiency. It calls for salaries cuts, consolidation of offices, and abolition of some departments to lower town expenses.
The Kearney Post 6 of the Amernay Legion met to support national efforts to reduce unemployment. They will try to place local jobless residents, form a rifle team, and assist Bristol Improvement Association in luring new industries. Additional actions included draping the charter for 30 days in memory of Joseph L. Duffy, and visiting hospital veterans on March 14.
Dr Edward C Farnum of Newport spoke to the Lions Club about his Europe trip focusing on The Seeing Eye in Vevey near Lausanne Switzerland. He described long training times for guide dogs and distributed pamphlets as he urged Lions Clubs to support blind assistance programs locally and district wide. Oscar Pivin received baby care items after becoming a father. A boxing show was organized to raise funds for a milk fund and the club bowling team travels to West Barrington for a match with the Business Men's Club. Guests included Doran Farnum and Harold L Black.
Hope Circle No 70 Daughters of Isabella outlined plans at a meeting last night for the 15th anniversary of the organization. A banquet is set for Wednesday March 30 at the Knights of Columbus Home on State Street with arrangements led by Mrs Mary J Condon Mrs Sarah Sweeney Mrs Sophie Coughlin Mrs Margaret J Morris Mrs Bridget A Lewis Miss Mary A Callan and Mrs Alice Sylvia.
Several hundred attended the Washington bi centennial observance at Colt Memorial High School auditorium sponsored by Kearney Post American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary. Frank M Dunham praised Washington as military leader and shrewd businessman while Archie Adams and L H Callan urged service to ease unemployment. Performances by Bristol Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, Boy Scouts and vocalists complemented the program.
Regent Miss Cora Hill leads Bristol Chapter D A R delegates and alternates to the Spring Conference of the Daughters of the American Revolution at the Narragansett Hotel Providence. Events include a Thursday banquet business session a Washington bicentennial pageant and Friday sessions with lunch and a closing gathering.
