My Journey From the Kansas Homestead to Washington
The narrator recalls a childhood memory of his younger brother Lonny fighting a rattlesnake, family life on a remote hilltop, and a progression to Topeka study and a peak in Washington. He contrasts American neighborliness and democracy with Eastern Europe, praising freedom, public service, and a Utopian spirit in the capital.
America’s promise and the burden of progress
A reflective voice extols Washington as the capital and lauds America as a land with great potential yet real suffering. The speaker, a child of poor pioneers, rejects passive patriotism and urges belief and sacrifice to advance the nation toward its dreams. It contrasts idealism with harsh realities.
