Bristol prepares a July Fourth celebration with Vice President Texas Garner as a potential speaker after negotiations. Honorable Charles Walsh and Governor Vanderbilt among speakers, a large parade, concerts, a midway, a bonfire, a 48-gun salute, and a pyrotechnic display are scheduled with multiple sub committees approved.
Mr and Mrs John H Usher celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at their 1230 Hope Street residence. Family dinner planned with six children and twelve grandchildren, honoring the couple noted for health and past service including Mr Usher’s former Town Council role.
Stanley E. Friswell, Mount Hope Bridge manager, will be chief marshal of the town’s grand Fourth of July celebration. A Bristol resident since 1927, he led safety efforts in Bristol and nearby towns, contributed to mobile life-saving equipment, and served 26 months in World War I as Chief Quartermaster in Naval Aviation. He is active in the American Legion and Sea Scout groups.
Bristol plans a testimonial dinner for Coach Charlie Burdge and Warren high school champions tomorrow night at the Hotel. The program recognizes the team as Bristol County’s first state champions from Class C. Guests include Eddie Collins of the Boston Red Sox, Neil Mahoney, Leroy Staples, Jack Martin, and John Healey Jr. as chair.
The Bristol Boy Scout Bugle and Drum Corps earned second prize in the junior class bugle and drum corps contest at the State Department VEFW in West Warwick. Warren Scout Corps won first with 96.16 to Bristol 95.08. Norman Rene, Bristol drum major, took third in the drum major class. The corps meet Scout Hall at 6 45 pm for practice and planning, including finances and the Fourth of July parade. Some members were absent due to illness or attending an international camporee in Canada. The West Warwick trip was carpool funded by parents and friends.
Bristol Rotarians and guests meet at St Michael s Parish House at 6 30 PM to celebrate the club s tenth year. Speakers include Ira Lloyd Letts and Thomas J Meehan. toastmaster Judge Edward L Leahy. greetings by Oliver S Edmiston and Percy Hodgson. history read by secretary Howard R Newman. group singing planned.
Governor William H Vanderbilt and visiting officers will be entertained by Mr and Mrs R F Haffencoder Jr immediately after the parade with officials and celebration committee members in attendance.
Pupil James Clark presented Mrs Grace Barrett with a white pocket book and the girls gave a rhinestone pin set as the Mason School marks thirty five years of her teaching service. Barrett is now placed on retirement.
Miss Priscilla Abbott Drury of Dedham announces her engagement to Manley Butler of Dedham and Duxbury. Drury, educated in Bristol, Colt High School, Bancroft, and Radcliffe, taught at St Mary’s in Concord and lectured on Bible appreciation in Boston. Butler, son of Mrs George Butler, attended Browne and Nichols and MFA School, is a Boston artist and member of several art groups and clubs.

The Countryside Garden Club hosts a two day flower show starting tomorrow at the Girl Scout House High Street with 150 entries listed. Bristol Garden Club contributes red white and espine AMweMCAT as a featured display and 25 children’s entries join the exhibits alongside Warwick Ye Kingstown and Rehobeth clubs.
More than 50 tables were in play at a Bristol women’s card party held in the Crst auditorium last night to raise funds for the Fourth of July celebration. Mrs. Gladys M Brightman led the arrangements committee with candy sale run by Mrs. Elmer S. Mapes, Mrs. Olive Peckham, and Mrs. Thomas Brightman.
Bristol Aerie of the Fraternal Order of Eagles names additional sub committees at a meeting led by President Pasquale I Massano. New units include Memorial and By Laws groups with members listed as Louis Ascoli Domenic DiMartino Manuel Philips Jr Frank Cunha John F Viera Joseph F Pannone Anthony J Nunes Louis Matrone Manuel Perry Edward Rinaldi.
A Bristol columnist details attending the Rotary International convention in Cleveland. He recalls hosting by Dr and Mrs Eugene LeClair amid scenic country settings, meeting John Burke now at Oglebay Norton, and the vast turnout of 10 000 Rotarians. He describes events from lake steamers to a New England dinner, speeches by Paul Harris and international figures, and a skating carnival with delegates from India Argentina and New Mexico. The journey continues by train to New York and by boat home.
