Vast Highway Program reshapes Rhode Island travel plans

The federal state highway program advances toward approval, promising a Providence to Newport freeway within five years. Metacom avenue will likely become a secondary road, while Bristol locations near Ferry, Bay View Avenue, and Tupelo Street mark planned entrances and exits. The 13 year, 51 billion dollar network aims to eliminate grade crossings, link all states, boost economy and land values, and cut travel times for motorists, with taxes on gasoline and tires to fund the project.
