Fourth of July Committee Advances Celebration Plans
The Fourth of July Celebration Committee voted to have the Whirlwinds and the N I R Co baseball teams as afternoon attractions on the Common. They leased the Common to Clarence Chase of Fall River for 525 dollars after council action on carnivals. Fred Williams Jr was named parade grand marshal. The Declaration of Independence will be read at Colt Memorial High School by Frederick Vera. The U S S Ralph will be in Bristol for the day with 130 sailors and the Naval Training Station Band.

At a Friday meeting in Providence officers announced that Battery C 243rd C A (HD) would take part in the Fourth of July parade in this town, marking the unit's planned participation in the festivities.

Mount Hope Bridge Opens and Wins First Prize
The Mount Hope Bridge linking Providence and Newport Rhode Island opened October 24 1929 and was praised as a landmark in New England. It later won the American Institute of Steel Construction first prize for 1929 artistic steel bridge design on June 10 1930. The span reaches 6130 feet with a 1200 foot main span and 325 foot towers, built as a wire cable suspension with granite facings and architectural paneling.
