Animals Sleep Patterns at the Bronx Zoo Observed
William Bridges of the New York Zoological Society toured the Bronx Zoo by night with the night watchman and documented how animals sleep. Gorillas and great apes lounged in various poses while birds, bats, and perching species used legs or tendons to remain clamped to branches. Elephants nap standing or lying, hippos sleep underwater briefly, and fish have no eyelids making sleep detection hard.
