Three Bristol Boys Prepare to Ship With Blackhawks
Three Bristol youths Sgt. Herman F. Gablinske James W. Butler and Joseph J. Rucci were bound for duty with the 86th Division in New York. The Black Hawk Division arrived to cheers and whistle signals on transports docking at the port and traveled by 18 special trains to Camp Kilmer for redeployment. Afterward they will accompany the division to Camp Devens then take a 30 day leave before further duty.

Man Sustains Deep Cut Testing Fan at Buffingtons
Arthur M. McCaw co owner of Buffingtons Pharmacy severely lacerated his hand while testing a fan left running all day. He opened his hand near the blades to test heat and was caught, risking amputation. Dr. William L. Serbst treated the wound with fourteen stitches.

Firemen Save Tenants From Rear Staircase Blaze at 8 State Street
A general alarm fire in the rear entrance staircase at 8 State Street was discovered by Mrs. Jennie Bailey who was carried to safety by Capt. Christy Travers. Fire Chief Moses Moore credited Navy personnel and rescued residents Manuel Louis and Jessie Pimental among others as smoke filled the first floor.

Red Cross Completes Surgical Quota and Closes Rooms
Mrs. Henry Wood says the Red Cross surgical quota is finished and rooms will close until the next shipment arrives. A State Sanitation representative in Bristol defended the sewage plant, calling anonymous complaints unfounded and giving the plant a clean bill of health.

Surviving a Flying Fortress Escape over Germany
Lt. Jim Duffy recalls bail-out from a Flying Fortress under heavy German fighter attack over southern Germany. His plane exploded, he parachuted into a field, buried his chute, and wandered toward France before being captured in Alsatian territory. He sustained a leg wound from a 20 mm round and spent days in a jail cell with a fellow pilot, separated by silence.
