Arthur S. Almeida Hero On USS Franklin

Aviation ordnanceman third class Arthur S. Almeida, of Bristol New Jersey, among the crew of the carrier Franklin, helped survivors fight fires after a March air strike. The ship, 27,000 tons, returned to New York after a battle that left 341 dead 431 missing and 300 wounded.

Bristol Yacht Club Announces Open House and Dance Plans

The Bristol Yacht Club will open its season on June 30 and host a members only Open House on July 1 from 4 to 6 pm. An Entertainment Committee dance is planned for July 3 with committee members led by Mrs Gordon B. Small.

Prisoners of War Return Home for Brief Leaves

Cpl. Clarence J. King son of Francis E. King of Bay View avenue spends a 65 day leave at home after being a German prisoner from 1943 to 1945. He reports good treatment and a ringside view of Berlin bombing. Lt. George H. Wilson son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Wilson of Brain tree Mass spends a 60 day leave with wife Eleanor St Angela Wilson. He notes mild harshness before Moosburg and a tough long march. he will report to Atlantic City after leave.

Planning Board urges adoption of plat ordinance

The Planning Board approved a platting ordinance and will recommend it to the Town Council. The board also urged release of revised zoning maps and copies of the zoning ordinance, and urged stricter enforcement of a sidewalk bicycle ban to prevent injuries. Memorial Sedilia Planned at St Michael's Church

A contract is let for two memorial sedilia in the sanctuary of St Michael's Church. The right sedilium honors Mrs Emily Bennett McDougall, the left honors George S Pailthorpe. Designed by Howe and Prout Providence architects, Nobbs wood carvers of New York to execute.

Paul Bland Richards son of Mr and Mrs Charles Richards of this town graduated from the U S Naval Academy on June 6 and received his commission as ensign in the U S Navy. On June 7 Ensign Richards married Miss Phyllis Marie Gray at St Marys Church Annapolis. Doris M Gray was maid of honor and bridesmaids were Florida F Sariego and Claire Richards. Navy Carrier USS Hancock Hero Anthony J Surgento

Anthony J Surgento fireman first class USNR son of Mr and Mrs Matthew Surgento 12 Brown Ave shares a one day record of 71 enemy aircraft shot down 19 probably downed eight destroyed and 12 damaged during a Tokyo raid on Feb 15 1945. Hancock had earlier battered Okinawa eight days straight tallying 600 plane strikes with ten ships sunk. Commanded by Capt Roger F Hickey the carrier supported Samar Leyte invasion and Iwo Jima air operations amassing 190 strikes accounting for nine warships 32 merchant ships and 241 enemy planes with battle action entries in crewmen records.
