John J. Sylvia Named Rhode Island Legion Department Commander

John J. Sylvia, past commander of Kearney Post No 6, was named Rhode Island Department commander at the 41st annual American Legion convention in Central High School auditorium. He succeeds after serving out a term due to the death of Joseph F Morrell and becomes the first in over forty years to serve more than one term.

Yacht Club Dance Plans Are Complete

Plans for the annual Bristol Yacht Club dance on the Fourth are complete. Ralph Stuart's Orchestra will furnish music with Earl Rounds on piano. Hooton Fund Receives Donations Toward Target Total

Donations totaling 703 dollars have been received for the Hooton Fund. Contributions come from Bristol Mfg Corp local 220 400, BMC 100, Plant collection 275, Catherine F Smith 25, Benjamin F Lindemuth 10, Anonymous 2, and Mr and Mrs Manuel Silveria. Previous total was 475 dollars.

Coast Guard Rescues Five Youths Missing in Bay

Chief Norman S Pickett reports the Tug responded after a worried parent said five youths disappeared in a quahog skiff during bad weather. The group left Warren for Newport and failed to return by 8 pm. After a late night search, a radio message confirmed the youths had reached land safe.

Shin Party Planned for Coast Guard Cutter Spar

James D Rielly and John R White announce plans to assemble ship parts for officers and crew of the Spar. Ensign Mike Leach leads a committee that met a civilian panel to arrange a family outing in August with location to be announced later. Townspeople are urged to back the effort to thank the Coast Guard for its service.

August Sewer Project Nears Operation In Sowams Dive

Lois Tortoree sewer superintendent said the Sowams Dive sewer line and pumping station should be operational by the end of August. Workmen laid 2409 feet of sx 4 forces or os amded pa hee, connecting Greenway Drive to a manhole on the Rhode Island Veterans Home property.
