Fourth of July Committee Names Sutcliffe Chief of Staff

The Bristol Fourth of July Committee announced J William Sutcliffe as chief of staff at Friday night’s meeting. Invitations to Metcalf Burdick Gerry and Saint Louis Bishop Sanford were discussed along with attendance by Connery and others. Fireworks permits and displays were approved for June 24 and a $3 bell ringer stipend plus 2000 souvenir medals were authorized.

Motorcycle Collision Injures Warren Rider Cars Involved

Edward Olech of 181 Metacom Avenue Warren riding a motorcycle and Felomena Felopes of Long Lane Warren collide with a sedan at Mount Hope Avenue and Wood Street Friday night 845 o clock. Olech suffers cuts bruises but non serious injuries per Dr Harold DeWolf. The sedan occupants Maria Cabral and two children escape injury. car sustained minor damage.

School Committee Elect Teachers at Colt Memorial High

The monthly School Committee meeting covered teacher appointments for evening schools and new staff at Colt Memorial and John Post Reynolds schools. Marguerite O Neil was hired for domestic science in Warren, with prior studies in France and at Lesley. Oliver School teachers gained summer school use in Hayman and Burton buildings. The board also approved abolishing A and B grades at Guiteras Memorial and ratified junior prom plans.

Bristol Model Yacht Club Sets July Race in Harbor

The Bristol Model Yacht Club votes to hold a bona fide race on July 2 in Bristol Harbor with a $25 forfeit per side. Three judges and three contestants from each side to meet and finalize race details under the Model Yacht Racing Association rules. Bristol harbor is favored for deep water and wind to suit Herreshoff style boats.

Portsmouth Ferry Trips Discontinued During Repairs

The Newport & Providence Railway Company will suspend trips between Portsmouth and Newport while a new float is built at the Portsmouth ferry slip. The Bristol ferryboat will be repainted and is not expected to operate for about a week.

Auditorium Exercises At John Post Reynolds School

Friday afternoon program featured three short plays and two speaking contests. Casts included Romita Goldstein and others in Little Vegetable Men. William West and colleagues in The 100 Percent Perfect Child. Angelina Ranalli and Emily Velleca in Playing Grown Up. First speaking contest honors went to Irene Goldstein with Mary Vieira as runner up. Alfred Paiva won first in the second contest with Jennie Morra second. Emily Paiva closed with Old Ironsides.

12 year old charged with incendiarism after two day chase

A 12 year old, eluding police for two days, confessed to setting fires behind St Marys parochial school and in his home. He was captured Friday night after a pursuit through town led by Truant Officer James Meiggs and Patrolman Demars. Police doubt the Randall cottage blaze was started by thieves, while locals suspect a petting party cigarette caused the fire.
