Plans for Bristol July 4th celebration advance
The observance committee met in the Burnside Memorial building to push plans for Bristol’s Independence Day events. A U S S Manley destroyer was slated to anchor in Bristol Harbor. Girl Scout Council and Bristol Train of Artillery Band agreed to participate in the grand parade. Scoutmaster Geo R Fish pledged a Boy Scout rally on the Fourth. Subcommittees named chairs for reception, sports, firemen’s contest, water battle, bonfire, party, automobile, publicity, police, badges, boxing, band, and afternoon exercises with multiple volunteers.

Bristol Self Help Plan grows 102 garden plots group efforts
In Bristol a community agricultural project named the Bristol Self Help Plan has started planting about 20 acres east of Metacom avenue. Joseph Pacheco chairs the workers, with 93 families on 105 plots sharing duties. Seed, fertilizer, and tools are supplied, and a guard watches the field. Planting began May 10 with crops including wax beans, corn, carrots, cabbage, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, and beans. Prizes, cash incentives, and state grants support the effort, with 10 percent of produce sold locally and 90 percent returned to families for winter canning.

The Portuguese American Civic League will sponsor the Cotton Ball at the Bristol Casino on Thursday evening. Officials and prominent Rhode Island and Massachusetts figures will attend. A cotton gown contest with three awards will be judged by a panel led by William H Angevine. Proceeds aid the Rotary Food Station Fund.

Reba Rebekah Lodge Hosts Memorial Plans and Music
Reba Rebekah Lodge No 12 held a regular meeting at Odd Fellows Hall Bristol County. Guests from Past Noble Grands Assoc No 3 attended. A memorial service for deceased members was planned for the next meeting. An invitation from Celestia Lodge No 6 to Warren Baptist Church services on June 18 was accepted. The program featured piano by Mrs Gladys Brightman, vocal solos by Myrtle Clark, Harmonica Boys selections, and three reels of motion pictures. Ice cream and cake were served. mothers and daughters night was announced for the next meeting.
