Council withholds pay awaiting contract signing

Town Council Tuesday night voted to withhold Jo seph Benevides’s garbage collector salary until his contract is signed and bond furnished. Building Inspector Ott Bailes asked where his duties end and police responsibilities begin, a question referred to the Town Solicitor. The fire department disconnected rain water outlets from sanitary sewers at all buildings, leaving some schools disconnected. Charlies C Mello was appointed special constable. Burial lot perpetual care books were received for Warren, Bullochklot, Davis and McCaughes.

WAAC Day in Town Delayed by Duties and Age Limits

Cpl Marguerite Blackburn in charge of WAAC Day in town Tuesday could not reach the Library at the YMCA until 2:30 and left for Providence at 6:30. The new Providence recruiting office opened that day and she was detained. Young women visited the Y morning and evening, some were turned away for age or enlistment requirements, a few application blanks were given out.

Bristol Captain Recalls Torpedoing in Atlantic

Captain Harold McCaw related the sinking of his Argentine meat cargo ship by an Italian submarine. After two torpedoes and a third explosion, lifeboats survived 25 hours at sea and were rescued by Spanish and Argentine vessels aided by an American plane. He praised the aid from Argentines and noted crews endured extreme hardship.

Three Bristol firefighters badly injured weeks ago visit the office to express gratitude for the community fund and hospital support. Two Clothing Drives To Be Held This Month

Bristol hosts two charitable clothing drives this month. The Save the Children Federation collects used garments for British and refugee children from June 7 to 10. D A Davis of the War Prisoners' Aid visits Stalag VII-A near Munich where 100,000 Allied, including American, British and Polish soldiers live in barracks with limited space and amenities. The camp features a church theater hospital football field and a town square with a broadcast loudspeaker system.
