Shrapnel souvenir from Pearl Harbor wounds Mrs Dillon

Mrs Freda Schafft welcomed her son in law and daughter Warrant Officer J W Dillon and his wife home for the weekend in 512 Thames street. Mrs Dillon was wounded at Pearl Harbor by shrapnel with a leg wound requiring six stitches. The shrapnel piece is kept as a keepsake. Dillon will be stationed at Quonset Point after returning from assignments in California and Washington.

WAAC Day at the YMCA Library prompts enlistment drive

Cpl. Marguerite Blackburn of WAAC will staff the YMCA Library today from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm to provide information and enroll recruits. Eligibility requires 21 to 45 years, height 5 ft to 6 ft, two years of high school, and married women with no children under 14 may apply. Lt Katherine Duval urged defense plant workers to seek release before enlisting, noting strong need and hoping for a large turnout. Bristal reports two WAACs in service, Marie J. Schinigei and Ruth Vo Toers, as the WAAC program grows since its 1942 inception.

Moren Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 398th CA

Lt Col Albert A Moren of the 398th CA was promoted after 18 years of service. A New England native, he began with the 243rd CA Rhode Island National Guard in 1925 and held top small arms duties in Rhode Island before serving in multiple battalions at Camp Stewart and Camp Davis. He visited Camp Edwards with his family for the holidays. his son Robert A Moren is a Private First Class with the U S Marines in the Pacific.

Departed War Veterans Honored On Memorial Day

Memorial Day observances drew hundreds to Bristol area cemeteries and the Soldiers and Sailors Monument as a Sunday afternoon parade and services recalled 1776, Civil War, and World War II ideals. Rev Graetz delivered the address. wreaths were laid by local groups. Taps echoed, and Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was read by Miss Anna Kebrek.

The Wishing Well in Three Acts at St Marys

The Wishing Well a romantic three act play is presented at St Marys Auditorium under church auspices. Cast includes Lady Mary played by Joan Doyle and Noreen by Jean Burke with Richard Riden as Terence Fitzpatrick and Lucien Capone Jr as Squire Matthew Baxy. Mrs Theresa Donovyan directs with Madaline Neiderer as accompanist and James F Meiggs as stage manager overseeing scenery and lighting.

Hobson Accepts Taunton USO Directorship

Earl H Hobson former YMCA secretary for 14 years and now assistant director of the Jamestown USO Club has accepted the post of Taunton Massachusetts USO director. He starts June 15 to direct a 12 room mansion based club with Rhode Island style facilities. Dedication ceremonies are planned for late June and Mrs Hobson and their son Bruce will remain in Jamestown for the summer.

Fourth of July Benefit Dances Scheduled by 1943 Committee

The 1943 Fourth of July Celebration Committee and the Y M C A sponsor three Thursday and one Monday dances in the Y gym starting this Thursday. Proceeds go to the Fourth of July Committee treasurer to cover celebration expenses. Dances set for June 3 10 17 and 21 from 8 to 11 with standard admission.

The couple will reside at 60 Thames street and Mr Schaffiff will report for U S Army service June 10.
