Day Camp Closes Today With Gala Games

The YMCA day camp ends today after three weeks of operation. A gala program will celebrate all youngsters who attended at any time this month. Birthdays celebrated this week include Douglas Heyman and Nelson Weaver.

St Elizabeth’s Picnic Set for August 8 at Regers Farm

St Elizabeth’s Church will hold a picnic and outing on Sunday August 8 at Regers Farm. Jointly sponsored by the Holy Name Society and the Holy Rosary Society, the event runs from noon to 3 PM with entertainment and refreshments through the afternoon. Chairmen are Mrs Arthur Gordeiro and Mrs Manuel Vargas.

Bristol Man Hurt As Car Overturns

William C. Johnson a 70 year old resident of Poppasquash suffered body bruises minor cuts and a severe shaking up when his car overturned after a collision on Hope street near the Bristol Warren line shortly after 5 pm yesterday. The crash occurred when a passing car hooked its right rear bumper with Johnsons front bumper causing his car to be driven to the curb and topple. Johnson was treated at home by Dr A F DAngelo and assisted from the scene by Clinton D Baer and William Bourque Jr. He was later taken home by Gilbert C Hoover town council president who happened to be nearby. The Baer car carried five passengers and others were only slightly shaken.

Declarations Filed For Town Committees Under New Primary Law

Town Clerk John W Church remained open until midnight to receive candidacy declarations for Democratic and Republican Town Committees under the new Primary Law. By noon today many Democrats filed names led by Robert J Anderson and other residents, while Rear Admiral Gilbert C Hoover filed the lone Republican declaration. A Board of Elections telegram instructed keeping the office open Saturday July 31 to receive endorsements and declarations and to transmit copies to the Secretary of State.

Bristol YMCA Beats Esso In Twilight League Half-Game From First

The Bristol YMCA nine defeated defending champions Esso 8 to 0 behind Bob Malley as Esso vanished from playoff contention. Willi e Alves allowed six runs in under three innings while Marty Biancuzzo and Frank Murgo led the Y attack with three hits apiece and a homer.

Senator Coggeshall Celebrated on 86th Birthday

State Senator Daniel G Coggeshall was feted at Martin Hall in Bristol with Governor John O Pastore leading a large gathering of state and federal officials. A rain shower scattered guests briefly before activities resumed, and Coggeshall received a chair and radio as gifts. The event featured entertainment by Happy Stan Ay and a long list of local officials and dignitaries from Bristol, Warren, Providence, and Rhode Island agencies.

Invitations Issued to Fifty Five Drum Corps for Bristol Event

The Fifth Annual Drum Corps competition sponsored by the Bristol Boy Scout Bugle and Drum Corps will be held Sunday August 8 in Bristol. Invitations have been issued to 55 drum corps including groups from Pawtucket Jamestown Webster East Providence Riverside Providence West Warwick Worcester Fitchburg and several Italian and veterans organizations.

Civic Association Meeting Postponed in Bristol

The Bristol Business Civic Association delaying its Monday August 2 meeting until further notice announced by secretary Maynard Suzman. The item lists numerous local fife and drum corps and civic groups from Massachusetts Rhode Island and Connecticut as part of event preparations and a mail box upgrade on Hope Street near the bank.

Y M C A Names Leaders for Basketball Committees

At a Y M C A Athletic Committee meeting Chairman D V A Capone named Louis Castriotta chair of the Y M C A Industrial Basketball League Committee for 1948 49 and Dr Anthony Ramos as chair of the Y M C A Third Annual Gold Medal Basketball Tournament. Each chair will pick members and report to the committee at the September meeting. Additional business included electing Attilio Pansa as vice chairman with C C Cirillo as secretary and Dr Anthony Ramos as treasurer. A by laws committee was formed with Anthony Agatiello George Boutiher and Salvatore Massano. New Athletic Committee members elected were Benjamin Hazen Ralph Nash and Michael Ascoli.

Torch Relay Across Europe Links Olympia to London

The Olympic torch arrived at Wembley Stadium in London carrying a flame lit in Olympia on July 15. About 2,000 runners covered 2,313 miles through Greece Italy Switzerland France Luxembourg Belgium and England amid cheering crowds. The flame traveled from the Temple of Zeus to a memorial for Baron de Coubertin, founder of the modern Games.

Captain Raymond Makowski urges families to mail letters to Bristol Battery C 243 AAA AW Bn RING Camp Edwards Mass as 102 men and two officers depart Bristol at 7 30 am for a two week drill. They will travel via Mt Hope Bridge meet Battery B Newport at Island Park and convoy to the camp. An advance echelon left yesterday and Battery C plans The Flak newspaper to publish daily during the encampment.

Henry DeWolf Wins Beetle Race in Bristol Meet

The Yankee sailed by Henry DeWolf won the race Tuesday afternoon with Seth Paull on Scout finishing second and John White on Manana third. Paull announced three inter yacht club races over the next 36 days, with events at Coles River Barrington and Bristol.
