Oil Spill In Narragansett Bay Warns Local Sailors

A Greek freighter left an oil slick in Narragansett Bay and Mt Hope Bay spreading across Bristol harbor and beaches. Poole Named Bristol Phoenix Editor Fifth Time in 117 Years

Alden W. Poole will become editor of The Bristol Phoenix on July 27 succeeding Roswell S. Bosworth after twenty five years in that role. Bosworth will remain publisher and oversee advertising and printing while continuing the This and That column. Poole, a Taunton native and Brown and Boston University trained journalist, has been Phoenix news editor since 1952 and previously worked for the Taunton Daily Gazette and Catholic papers. He is married with two children.

Rainy weather did not dampen Old Dan Coggeshall’s birthday celebration indoors at the Lobster Clan. The event drew firefighters politicians and celebrities including Magda Gabor. Organizers Edward D. Kunz Anthony Junes and Dr Raymond A. Thomas led the arrangements with Young Dan Coggeshall contributing to party plans.

Judge Leahy Chooses Massano for Walley Oliver Fuel Bid

In a rare move the Walley and Oliver school fuel contract awarded to Massano Brothers at 128 cents per gallon for about 16 000 gallons while F J Murphy Inc wins Rockwell and Burton contracts at a lower bid. The decision followed an executive session and involved two school buildings with the committee citing burner installation as a factor.

Funeral of Judge Leahy Tomorrow Morning

The funeral for Edward Laurence Leahy judge of the U S District Court in Rhode Island and former U S Senator will be held tomorrow at 8 a m from his home 42 High Street followed by a solemn high mass at St Marys Church at 9 a m Honorary bearers should assemble at the church at 8 30 a m Leahy died Wednesday at age 68 after months of illness Born February 9 1886 in Bristol he led a long career in public service including probate judge Bristol school committee and roles in the American Legion He served in World War I and later held various state posts before focusing on tax administration and public service in Rhode Island.

McKenna Trial Set For August 3

John McKenna 21 of 162 Thames Street is held on $3500 bail for trial August 3 after pleading innocent to driving so as to endanger death resulting and leaving the scene of an accident. He drove the car that struck and killed Mrs. Mary Pivin at Hope and Oliver Streets. McKenna was arraigned at a Warren court session and is jailed at Bristol County Jail. Five youths were in his car. authorities say they knew someone was struck.

High Esteem for Edward L Leahy Quietly Died in Bristol Rhode Island

A tribute recalls Edward Laurence Leahy born February 9 1886 in Bristol Rhode Island who dedicated forty five years to law public service and state affairs. He served as Probate Judge in his town then as Rhode Island General Assembly representative and on the Rhode Island Tax Commission before a Senate appointment. His life honored by Gov Pastore who praised his loyalty and service to country state and town.
