A Gorham Maine letter recalls a mother and daughter clinging to attic treasures while the kitchen becomes the family hub again. The note notes attics fading from home design as kitchens reclaim prominence and mothers miss the old vertical storeroom.
The 100 piece U S Army Field Band known as The Kings of the Highways performs tonight at 8 30 p m in Burrs Hill Park Warren with a 32 member planning committee and Bristol musical lovers expected to attend The band tours six to eight months a year travels in a nine vehicle convoy and has played Carnegie Hall Hollywood Bowl and stages across Canada and Mexico.
In the attic a stash of worn clothing and household items shows how generations saved and repurposed. Magazines such as Youth's Companion Christian Herald New England Homesteads line the space alongside Victorian furniture and heirlooms saved for later generations.
Thomas D. Adams Jr. of 22 Burton Street was named chairman of the Red Feather drive in Bristol set for October 5 to 30. Adams, president of the Bristol YMCA and Bristol Community Chest director, will work with five area chairs and state staff to run campaigns across four departments and support 100 health welfare and recreational agencies.
The YMCA day camp opened on the Wardwell property at Mt. Hope Bay with 44 of 47 boys enrolled. Camp director Joseph Securo noted high enthusiasm with swimming baseball races and boating, and announced fishing instruction and a watermelon feast for tomorrow. Assistants John Paul Andrade and Joseph Murgo were praised for their hard work.
Hundreds of friends and family gathered for the funeral of Judge Edward L. Leahy. Services began at the Leahy home and continued with a high mass at St. Marys Church led by Msgr. Lynch. Attendees included local officials, U S and state officials, and delegates from Taunton sisters and various organizations.
The Bristol area sees elm infections rise from nine to twenty in ten days. State entomology reports 390 cases statewide this year with ten on town land, eight on private property, and two on state land. The Dutch Elm Advisory Committee calls for rapid research funding as university trials offer near prevention but not scale. Officials warn infections could surge overnight as elms are surveyed.
The Kingsmen Bugle and Drum Corps won three first prizes at the New England Musical Festival in Jamies Park Warren including playing and concert numbers and junior male majors for Ame Dee Dallaire. Their parade waltz and freeze were well received and rehearsals resume tomorrow and Thursday ahead of weekend competitions. The Rangers Bugle and Drum Corps also competed, taking second prizes for playing and their drum major.
The Bristol Yacht Club announces its annual clambake on Sunday August 16 at Carrs Fish Hawk Farm Metacom Avenue. Clamcakes chowder served at 2 p.m. bake at 4 p.m. Reservations and tickets from Mrs Helen LeClair or the yacht club steward. Bakemaster will be Mr Sadler, longtime colleague of the late Pop Trainer.
Dixon Lubricating Saddle Company may close the grassy lot beside the town beach on Hope Street if thefts from cars continue. Vice President Robert R. Miller said police and the town council have been informed after workers’ cars were looted of cigarettes and small items. The fenced area, used for worker parking and shaded picnicking, sits east of Hope Street across from the beach and could be withdrawn from public use this summer.
Recreation Director Anthony Agatiello announced a ticket deadline for the annual Red Sox game on Wednesday August 5 against the St. Louis Browns. Children who have joined beach or playground activities must obtain admission tickets from recreation instructors at the town common Veterans Park or the town beach on or before Monday August 3.
Civil Defense ground observers in Bristol are invited to a training session tomorrow at 7 30 p m in the BTA Armory State Street An Air Force representative from the New Haven filter center will explain reporting aircraft sightings and how calls are handled at observer posts An instructional film One Plane One Bomb will be shown Sgt McMertery will discuss command notifications All GOC spotters and those interested in the system should attend.
Fifteen young girls showed off decorated doll carriages in Bristol playgrounds annual doll carriage parade. Florinda DeFelice 3 won prettiest with a May Basket pram while Joy Anne Brown Lucille Donato were prettiest runners up. Mary Lee Sousa 5 earned most Olen entry and Lil Emily 3 received most unusual prize. Laura Ann Maguire wore the most humorous outfit. Judges included Mrs Hazen Almeida Securo, with Naomi Sousg and Lucy Foti assisting.
The Bristol Warren and Barrington water authorities met in Bristol Town Council chambers to pursue coordinated actions against high rates. They agreed to pool ideas and resources to improve water service and establish reasonable rates, with future steps to be announced.
