Talent Fred tines in his cellar workshop at 8 Noyes Ave in this town carves miniatures to be sold for the Rogers Free Library Building Fund.
Fred Hodgdon, 87, Rogers Free Library trustee and master cabinet maker, displays handcrafted miniature mahogany pieces in the Makowsky Building to support the Library Building Fund. A Bristol, Maine native and former Herreshoff shipbuilder, Hodgdon began with carved boats for church fundraising, now selling pieces to finance improvements.
A reception will be held on Saturday July 26 at St Elizabeth’s auditorium to welcome Rev Henrique R Rocha pastor since 1936 home from a trip to the Azores. General chairman Hay mond Rodrigues and honorary chairmen include Rev Joaquim Lawrence Jose De Mello Mariano Rodrigues Dr Anthony Ramos Manuel M Lima Mrs Mary Bettencourt Anthony Rego and Frances Machado. Rodrigues said Rocha hopes to return July 25 but could be a day earlier or later depending on plane connections.
The annual mid season horseshoe tournament drew large crowds across playgrounds said director Anthony E Agatiello. Junior class saw Joseph Reynolds win alone then team with Joseph Ramos to reach doubles. Alberto Dupuis won senior singles. Domenic Parisi and William Belanger won doubles. Naomi Sousa praised Carol Felix for junior singles and doubles with Barbara Olstead. Ann Cavallaro defeated Pat Maturi for senior singles. Cecilia Bianchi and Sharon Francis won doubles. At Veteran's Memorial Park Donna Asciolla and Eileen Furtado will compete in the tour.
A Rogers Free Library building fund update lists contributions acknowledged by Mrs. Barnes Newberry Jr., chairwoman. Noted donors include Mr. and Mrs. Russell W. Southwick and Mr. and Mrs. J. Francis Connell each giving $10.00, with Carr Manufacturing Corp also listed among supporters.
The Sowams recreation board decides to keep the play area operating provided no further damage occurs. It cites deliberate vandalism in a built up neighborhood and warns offenders will be sought with police surveillance and town restitution promised. Councilman Joseph Goulart schedules a street light and residents pledge cooperation.
At YMCA Day Camp on Hog Island two teams led by Manuel Marshall and Stephen Hess battled to a tie in a weekly scavenger hunt. Marshall’s roster included Carl Annarummo Thomas Finn Glenn Watkinson Michael Cray Michael Baggett Arthur Cordeiro George Andrews James Duffy Stephen Martin Robert McKenzie Joseph Bertrand John Andrade Edward Massa and John DeRosa. Hess’s squad featured Peter Paul John Martin Duncan Cray Paul Salice Arthur Peloquin Russell Lundstrom Michael Eisenstadt Paul Vollaro Robert Cordeiro and Kenneth Botelho. The island dash continued as players explored the grounds for hidden clues.
