Local King Philip Little League Set to Open Playoffs

The King Philip League All-Star team meets Tiverton in the first day playoff at Veteran's Memorial Park at 5 30. Sixteen Bristol boys aged eleven and twelve aim to repeat 1952 success as District 2 aims for the state title with multiple rounds through July and August. The lineup includes Richard Medeiros Joseph Vera Stephen Mascena Gary Mendenhall Edward Josephs Bart Stanzione Joseph Travers Richard Raposa Joseph Duarte Allen Merritt Joseph Recupero Christopher Nerone Richard Guevremont Larry Piemontese with alternates Andrew Verro Warner Tabor. James Ruggiero notes the team looks strong and urges local spectators to attend.

Annual Pie Eating Contest On Town Common Tomorrow

The town hosts a morning and afternoon pie eating competition at the Town Common led by playground director Anthony E. Agatiello. Prizes go to top boys and girls across midgets juniors and seniors. A 8 pm community dance follows with Barbara Machado and Attilio A. Pansa in charge. The girls track meet Thursday July 24 includes a novelty nose race plus rope jumping, ball throwing, kicking and foot races at multiple play areas.

Girls Attend YMCA Day Camp at Hog Island

Twenty two girls left yesterday morning for Hog Island where the YMCA sponsors a girls day camp. Mrs Mary Seger Lunt oversees the program while Richard Tilden notes rising enrollment. Activities will mostly run separately from the boys with some joint trips. A planned Thursday outing includes a visit to Carver Mass to see the Edaville Train. Later, First Bristol Troop scouts held a hot dog roast at Mount Hope Bay camp with seven dogs eaten by some. An upcoming Camp Yangoog is planned with a Capture the Flag game led by Emil Desmarais and Michael Murgo.

Bowen to Head New Howard Building Office in Providence

William A. Bowen, vice president of Rhode Island Hospital Trust Company, will head the bank’s new Howard Building Office in downtown Providence, opening August 18. Bowen joined Hospital Trust in 1947, rising from assistant secretary in 1951 to vice president in 1957, and he is a Butler University and Harvard Business School graduate with Navy service. He has led civic efforts including United Fund and chaired the Rhode Island Community Chest campaign in 1954.

Plans Complete For Lord Mayor's Visit

The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Bristol England will visit the United States starting August 5 before arriving in this town on August 8 for a three day stay. Town officials will host a reception at 42 High St and tours of historic sites loom as Governor Roberts may attend. The party will be hosted by local residents and Rotary Club members with a Bristol welcome planned at the town hall and a send off for a return trip to other Bristols in the United States.

Annual Rumstick Pt. Town Beach Swim Scheduled

The fourth annual Rumstick Point to Bristol Town Beach swim will be held on VJ-Day August 14. Vincent Securo, swimming instructor, announced today. The event, co sponsored by the Bristol Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Board of Recreation, is open to all entrants who must provide a boat and rower. Boats depart Town Beach at 1:30 p.m. and the race starts at 2:00 p.m. Trophies will be awarded to boys and girls in midget junior and senior categories. Registration is at Town Beach.

Friend In Need Helps Court Interpreter Faria Aids Labao Case

In 5th District Court John C. Faria 21 of 14 Bourne St aided Judge James B. Linehan by translating for Joseph Labao 35 and his wife who spoke no English. Labao changed his plea from innocent to guilty on an assault charge, with sentencing postponed a month. police chief Anthony J. Ferrara noted the plea change.
