Officers for Philippines Named in President McKinley Plan
President McKinley announced officers for new volunteer regiments to serve in the Philippine islands. Frank A. Cook of Providence becomes major, Alvin A. Barker of Newport becomes captain, both to join the Twenty sixth Infantry led by Colonel Edmund Rice. The unit draws Rhode Island and New England volunteers, with enlistees from New York above latitude 46. Plattsburg hosts rising numbers as recruitment expands, and Newport locals from Co F of the First Rhode Island Volunteers seek assignment to Barker’s regiment. Recruiting at Providence continues as enlistments for the Twenty sixth proceed. The article also notes YMCA activities and a church meeting on the Anti-Saloon League in Norman Plass’s report, with plans for a building opening set for September 6 and local speakers at St Michaels and Association Hall.

Try a Gas Range Fire ready to use when desired
Too much heat at any time of the year is not commendable but a fiery kitchen with the thermometer at 100 degrees in the shade is undesirable. The gas range offers heat strong enough to cook with yet controllable and can be turned off when not wanted.
