The school board approved adding a modified commercial program for high school students after debate led by Supt. Mapes. Critics argued it could limit electives, but support noted a shift toward apt pupils with strong English and academics.
Thirty six community leaders will assist in the Bristol District Nursing Association annual membership drive starting next Monday for one week. led by Miss Julia A Herreshoff and Miss Evelyn C Carter with a large committee of officers and members from the board of directors and nursing committee.
Fred Bruno a 12 year old, son of Mr and Mrs Anthony Bruno of 67 Burton Street, suffered traumatic amputation of his left thumb and severe finger lacera tions when his hand was caught in a pulley at Ferrycliffe Farm. He was treated by Dr Paul Bruno with an antitoxin after being brought by Wayne Smith.
The Portuguese-American Independent Band Club announces a two day program on August 26 and 27 at the town farm Metacom avenue. The schedule includes concerts by the band field events of all types and a clambake. Arrangements are led by Joseph M Correira chairman with committee members Joseph A Sousa James Andrade Joseph Correira and Vasco Castro.
Town Councilman James J Veleca estimated five open air band concerts would cost nearly 500 dollars for the summer. He said about 100 dollars per concert with 75 dollars for musicians and the rest for lighting and amplifying equipment. Colt Memorial High School is likely venue. President J Floyd Huestis said a fundraising committee would be named if concerts are arranged.

A Crescent Park outing is planned for Thursday night for members and guests of the Children of Mary Sodality of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Arrangements are by Rose Digati Concetta Caizzi Julia Alfano and Anna Cavallaro.
Twenty members of the Kearney Ship Sea Scouts Veterans Life Saving Corps began a two hour drill at Rockwell Park. Clifford Adams led basic holds releases and carries with help from O Reid LeClair and others including Rhode Island Life Saving director William Bradshaw and Dr Marcel Talcott. A 20 hour course will qualify enrollees as agile-savers with continued water drill at Bristol harbor head tomorrow night.
The Italian Socialites Women's Club opens with an open-air gathering tonight at 6 pm on Mount Hope Bay shore. Members will be driven from 186 Wood Street by private car, box lunches served, and a business session to back a future tonsil choir clinic for needy Italian American children led by Mrs VastalaR Ruggiero.

He recounts loss of freedom in Czechoslovakia, describes a jaillike country, and urges vigilance as propaganda and threats precede aggression.
