Well Known Captain Chase Dies At 86

Captain Halsey Chase of Prudence Island and Bristol, Rhode Island, died after a short illness at 86. A veteran ferry operator since 1904, he helped develop Prudence Island’s summer colony and owned several vessels including the Harvest and Reliance. He taught school, built the Prudence school building, and was Bristol’s ambassador to the South. He remembered Civil War era events and Florida winters in Miami.

Nurse Anna Callan resigns from city school service

Mrs Anna D Callan, school nurse since 1944, resigns for health reasons and the resignation is accepted with regret by Supt Edward J Fitzgerald. Miriam J McCaughey granted a year leave. Margaret Murphy shifts to ninth grade. vacancies to be filled at July 25 meeting with other appointments planned.

Follin resigns two Bristol sewer posts

Werner E. Follin resigns as chairman of the Bristol sewer commission and secretary of the sewer construction committee. He states he is moving to another part of the state and will take effect June 30. The town council accepts the resignations. vacancies to be acted on at the next meeting.

Playgrounders Plan To See Red Sox Athletics Game

Artie Pan a announced a special event Friday at 10 am on the common playground as youngsters plan a trip to Boston on August 8 to see the Red Sox face the Athletics. They will solicit funds to cover travel costs. In league play Codfish tied Starfish 5-5 and Peaches beat Bananas 17 to 9.

Town Council Minds Dump Fire Costs and Hydrant Plan

Town council hears an $800 repair estimate for a bulldozer damaged by a fire at the town dump. Fires at the dump last May cost $908.96 to control as officials consider a hydrant at the entrance and 700 to 800 feet of two inch pipe. Police chief asked to study no parking zones on Beach road and Wales Drive after a Beach Terrace Improvement Association request.

Grace Castro Crowned Miss Fourth of July Queen

Grace Castro daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Castro was crowned Miss Fourth of July at the bandstand on the common just before the parade. Lt James A Lyle placed the crown after opening a sealed envelope naming the winner chosen by three naval officers.

Funeral Service For Salvatore Coppolino

The funeral for Salvatore Coppolino aged 20 from Pearse Avenue was held yesterday starting at 8 15 from Sansone Funeral Home followed by a solemn high Mass of requiem at 9 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Rev Emy DeMattia celebrated the Mass and read committal prayers at St Marys Cemetery.

Council Delays $1800 Assessors Bill for 1951 52

The town council held up a $1800 bill for three tax assessors for the 1951 52 year after solicitor Cert Lucien Capone asked for an opinion. The bill listed $600 for each assessor, including Francis P. McGovern, who is on the board of assessors, and noted service from July 1, 1951 to June 30, 1952. The town solicitor ruled the work not yet completed, delaying payment for services not rendered. The assessors are McGovern, State Senator Daniel G. Coggeshall, and Louis Castriotta.

Bristol Fourth of July parade draws 55000 in 1.5 mile procession

Governor Roberts serves as chief marshal as about 55,000 attend a four day celebration ending with a 1.5 mile parade from Reynolds School to Bristol Common. Nearly 4000 participants, 14 F-51 jets, naval ships USS Bristol and USS Hyman, and a King Philip Little League rout highlight a day of pageantry and crowding.

Memories of a Canadian bus tour with Inspector Darby

The group traveled through Ontario and northern Canada led by Inspector D H Darby of the Ontario Provincial Police. A young woman traveling with the party learned her father had died and Darby offered to drive her to North Bay for the midnight train to Kirkland Lake. In Sundridge they stayed at Hotel Bernard with Dalton J Caswell, and in North Bay they met a colorful local named Wookey.
