Submarine R-10 is due at 3 p m today in Bristol with R-2 scheduled for 7 a m tomorrow. Both will moor at Light House Service Pier at Constitution Street. R-10 visiting hours 4 to 6 p m today and both ships open to visitors tomorrow.
The Independent Band led by Joseph Sousa will open the Bristol Portuguese Independnt Band concert on Bristol Common from 8 to 10 pm. Soloists Manuel Castro and Arthur J Mello appear, with a clarinet duet by Mello and John Tufarole, and selections from Sousa's march to "Il Trovatore" and other works.
Bristol residents sponsor their famous Fourth of July celebration, a long standing tradition since 1827. The town continues its annual program with expected local involvement and festive ceremonies.
Stanley E Friswell leads Bristol preparations as 300 invitations go out for staff. R-10 and R-2 submarines, softball and baseball games, a band concert, and a midnight bonfire kick off two day events. Grand parade at 10:15 a.m. features police, staff, cadets, Sharp shooters, Newport Juniors, and governors with dignitaries in auto guard of honor.
A veteran of three wars will head the march as Regular Army troops from the 13th Infantry Fort Adams Newport bring their own band. Upwards of 300 sailors will also march, with some from the continued page note.
A schedule lists events through Tuesday on the Bristol Common including softball, baseball, a safety patrol game, a concert by the Portuguese, a monster bonfire, church bell ringing, a civic parade, patriotic exercises, a salute to the 48 states, a dress parade, a water battle for a firemen’s championship, twilight league baseball, and band concerts with a grand fireworks display. Most activities occur on the Common unless noted otherwise.
Employees of the Best Made Dress Company will be guests of the management at an outing late next month.
