Nunes Plans 1958 59 Budget and Treasurers Salary Rise

Treasurer Alfred N Nunes released the 1958 59 budget his final year in office proposing a higher salary for the treasurer tax collector job now at 3360. He notes combining offices cut total pay from 5382 and asks use of Rhode Island Public Expenditures Council recommendations as a basis for deliberation. He cites debt service totaling 92000 principal and 15806 29 interest with sewer projects as the largest item.

Martin to Decide Fate Of Budget Copy Request

The School Committee will seek the town solicitor's opinion on whether Mrs. Vasta L. Ruggiero can obtain a personal copy of the School Department budget under a new financial controls bill. Ruggiero asked for a copy as in past years, while Committeeman Anthony Pereira questioned the request. The bill requires a copy to be on display at the Town Clerk's office for taxpayers to inspect.

Navy Doctor to Speak at Y Dinner in January

Lieut Howard C. Taylor a South Pole medical officer will headline the annual Y dinner on January 20. The 29 year old New York City native earned a Yale BA in 1951 and an MD at Columbia. He served aboard USS Nespelen toward Antarctica and at South Pole Station for 11 months, also aiding as chaplain’s assistant and editor of the Yearbook. Tickets are available at the Y. The event will also feature the Outstanding Citizens Award and officers named by the nominating committee.

Council Approves Zone Change at Gooding Ave Bristol

The Bristol town council approved re zoning Lot fs on Assessors Plat 118 from residence C to Business for a First National Stores supermarket. A remaining 5 percent acre portion will have a public hearing Feb 6. Nearby residents urged a 100 ft residential buffer and beautification. others supported rezoning for expansion.

Borges Named Naval Academy Cadet Alternate and Air Force Exam

Robert J. Borges, a 1958 senior high school class member, was named an alternate for appointment as a cadet at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, announced by Rep. Aime J. For. He also was selected to take the examination for the Air Force Academy, the newest service school.

Barrington Times to Publish Weekly Newspaper

A new weekly paper for Barrington, named the Barrington Times, will debut next Thursday. It will focus solely on Barrington news, use a tabloid format, be printed at the Bristol Phoenix plant, with R. S. Bosworth Jr as editor. The office location is 185 Wash.

Legion Blood Drive Set for Jan 19 at Kearney Post

Commander George E. Dion Jr. of Kearney Post No. 6 announces a postponed blood drive will occur Sunday January 19 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Post Home on Franklin Street. John J. Sylvia directs the drive with a Bloodmobile from a local hospital, staffed by a doctor, three nurses, and two technicians. Anyone 21 to 60 in good health may donate a pint and join the regional blood bank, which has supplied about 25 percent of Rhode Island blood last year. A hot meal will be served after donation, and donors are asked to abstain from eating four hours before.
