Miss Farley Dropped From Fourth of July Committee
The town council failed to name Regina C. Farley to the Fourth of July Committee, omitting her from the approved list. Councilman Joseph Gallagher moved to add her, but the motion lacked a second and no action followed. Farley, longtime member and past Republican candidate, speculated the move could be political. Town Council Reviews Spar Island Ownership and Local Matters
The Town Council voted last night to have the Town Solicitor inspect Spar Island ownership. Councilman Domenic Canna urged the move for the benefit of the true sportsman. The council granted tag days January 23 and 24 and a mothers march January 28 in response to Carmella Russo’s petition. YMCA Week was proclaimed for January 18 to 26. Plans to ask the State Public Works Director to include resurfacing State Street, Bristol Ferry Lane, and the Thames Street to Colt Drive sidewalk were approved. The Highway Department budget may include reconstructing Sherry Avenue if feasible, per Joseph DaPonte’s petition. Police Chief Ferrara sought authorization to invest police pension funds in 100 shares of Socony Mobil Oil stock, which was granted. Mrs. Vasta L. Ruggieri protested parking meters in front of her home, alleging a lack of information and possible maneuvering. The council halted meter work pending measurements by the police chief and highway surveyor. A.P. Russo announced Lawson-Raiola Disabled American Veterans Chapter 15 would present a commendation to the council members, accepted for a 9:30 a.m. January 26 ceremony at the Burton School.
