Sickness Fund in Red Faces State Budget Strain
The Cash Sickness Insurance Fund shows a $132,650 annual deficit per a report by the Unemployment Compensation Board. Proposals to balance the fund include raising the payroll tax to 12 percent and cutting benefits to pregnant women and to workers on workers compensation. The board notes 24 percent of benefits currently go to those groups. Rhode Island and California run cash sickness programs with California restricting pregnancies and workers compensation cases.
