Federal troops guard Rhode Island rubber plant with parking ban

Police chief Ferrara announced a no parking zone around the United States Rubber Company plant in Bristol. About 40 federal troops under Major Stephenson moved in to guard the defense facility, with guards posted near the Bristol Manufacturing Co. and floodlights and a high fence added for security.

High Tide Follows Severe Wind and Rain at Harbor

A southeast wind and heavy rain produced an unusually high tide with rough seas. Little damage reported along the waterfront though a small sailboat and a skiff washed ashore near the harbor head. Harbormaster Samuel C Wardwell knew of no further damage. Residents of Poppasquash described the scene as entertaining as cars navigated the harbor head.

Christmas Seal Drive Totals $1000 Collected

Receipts from recent Christmas Seal sales total $1000, says Mrs N G Herreshoff, general chairman. Some donors have not returned mail sales, and she urges prompt settlements to pass all funds to the Bristol County pneumothorax clinic.

Bristol's First Is 10 Lb Baby Boy

Bristol's first birth of the New Year was a 10 pound boy named Frank Cunard Jr. at 9 15 this morning. Attending physician Dr C Paul Bruno reported both mother and son doing nicely. The mother is Mrs Harriot Hemple Cunard of 847 Hope Street.

Garden Club To Collect Books in Bristol

The Bristol Garden Club will collect books for the National Defense Book Commission and the American Red Cross, with Mrs Willam W. Perry announcing the effort. Bristolians are asked to leave old English literature biographies history adventure and current topics over the weekend. magazines are not wanted, and a drop location will be announced next week.

Bristol County Hospital Plan Favored By Doctors

Doctors at a Rotary Club meeting backed a Bristol County hospital to serve Warren Riverside and Swansea. They estimated 25 to 30 beds for about 300 maternity and 300 other cases yearly with operating costs around $100 per bed and total setup near $50,000.

Bristol Churches Answer Roosevelt Call To Prayer

Bristol churches and a local synagogue held services honoring President Roosevelt's call for prayer for service members and peace. A union service was held at First Baptist Church with bishops and clergy from nearby parishes. Motorists faced heavy traffic around the United States Rubber Company plant as troops were monitored nearby.

Local Red Cross head Rev A R Parshley announced a Bristol drive total of $591.48. Special Gifts Committee members listed donors from F Reginald Dimond to Mrs Annie Dixon and others, with district totals and a January 25 fundraising note.
