Bristol rang in 1940 with bells horns and noisemakers as 2000 celebrants gathered at six venues including the Bristol Casino Town Tavern and Hotel Belvedere. 500 Portuguese residents joined at Portuguese Independent Hall while 250 couples danced and sang as 10:30 banquet and Guignol traditions marked the early morning.

Final Rites Held for Former Senator William H Thayer
Prominent Bristol County figures attended the funeral for former State Senator William Hammond Thayer who died Friday night at his Metacom Avenue home after a long illness. The service was at George M Wilbur Chapel in Warren with burial in North Cemetery Providence, and Thayer was praised as a lifelong Bristol resident and geese breeder who served seven terms in the House and one in the Senate. He was born January 24, 1859, never married, and left no immediate relatives.
